Apocalypse Now, why did he ruin it?

I watched Apocalypse Now Redux yesterday out of curiosity and boy oh boy, it sucks hard. The original cut has just the right length and momentum to keep the viewer engaged. The Redux version slows it down to a crawl. Does the scene in the deserted camp with the Playboy bunnies or on the French plantation really add anything? I don't think so, it just adds a bunch of nothingness and it's way too long. Coppola should have realised he was at the height of his creativity when he made it and he should have left it alone.
