Anti-Drunk Driving Ads...

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice that in every single "drunk driving" related commercial that they show nothing but men getting pulled over? Seriously, it's always a dude behind the wheel in the scenarios they show and I think it's kind of "funny".

The one I always see is the "over the limit, under arrest" commercial where the cars are full of "beer" or what not and when they roll down the window, it all pours out of the car. I don't take offense to this, but I find it kind of weird that they wouldn't show more females in a situation like that. I don't know what the statistics say according to the "experts", but personally, I know more females than males that regularly drive around drunk. I am willing to bet that more men get ticketed for drunk driving, but still...come on. I've seen a number of times where a woman has been let off with a warning, even though she is obviously intoxicated.

Like I said, I don't take offense to this, being a dude, but I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this "trend".

I've seen about 6 of those ads, and only one had a woman in it. I guess it's their way of saying that men are more likely to be targeted by cops for DUI chacks. :dunno:

I've never seen one with a woman in it. Where I currently live they have "Road Blocks" all the time, especially around holidays. If they really want to get the point across; they should show an accident involving a drunk motorist where the occupants in the other vehicle dies and the drunk person lives. Then show how your life is ruined because of it.

"Your", meaning the drunk driver or the dead person? :dunno:

Shit is stupid. I've been seeing those non-stop lately, and quite honestly they do a diservice to any methods they partake to get serial drunk drivers off the streets. I always get a kick out of the evening news telecast when they broadcast that there will be twice as many 'rollers' on the street as usual, certain times of the year. Really nice strategy.

As far as the male roles in the commercials, mayeb it's because males are convicted X amount of times more than females? :dunno:

Come again?

Come on cuz!!! Are you drunk now? I'm from that area so represent right. Uh...That would be the "DRUNK" driver.

You're from the Chicago area I take it?

Anyway, I uh...I hope I'm just reeeeeally misunderstanding this, but uh...you think that if a drunk driver killed someone in a car accident and they themselves survived, that the drunk driver's life would be ruined?

If that's the case, I have to completely disagree with you from personal experience. I have a DUI myself and I've, unfortunately, driven drunk a few times before that. If I KILLED someone who was completely sober in a car accident because I was dumb enough to get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated, then my life wouldn't be ruined it all. They're the ones who would be dying. I would be getting exactly what I deserved.

Fortunately, I, and everyone else around me, was lucky enough to not have been hurt from my stupidity of drinking and driving and I am extremely thankful for that. If, however, I killed or injured someone because of my ridiculously bad decision, I wouldn't expect anyone to feel sorry for me. I would expect them hate me and feel sorry for the victims.

That's how Chicagoans represent.

While we're on the topic of commercials, on both radio and tv : Have you guys ever noticed how the "white sounding" "man of the house" is always portrayed as the dork while the "woman of the house" is ALWAYS portrayed as the one that really wears the pants . . runs the show, is holier than though, is thee prime authority and generally has it all together ?

And / or have you noticed : . . The male figures in commercials generally have "weasely" wimpy effeminate voices (which are electronically manipulated, BTW) to project a same sex orientation ?

God forbid we ever have an intimidating, John Wayne-ish sounding voice !! for that's the wrong kind of man that we wish to portray in Amerika !! :thefinger

I have "heard" that the "s.s.o." people xd o m i n a t e x the media - advertising establishment these days . . so it's no wonder

Quite frankly, it nauseates me ! :helpme:

As for the DWI commercials . . I believe what you guys are saying is true. Unfortunately . . or fortunately, as it were, I don't watch much tube these days. ~

Look Chef...

It's obvious that the dead persons life/lives would be ruined... they're dead. In my line of work, I have to deal with this from time to time. So for the sake of this discussion, I'll slooooow it down for you.

If you operate a motor vehicle/machine while intoxicated and kill someone, YOU WILL BE CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMICIDE. Chances are... YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL. Now lets say you're a CPA; a stock broker; a truck driver or whatever. When you get released it's gonna be difficult, if at all possible, for you to get back the life you had. You WILL lose your job. You MAY lose your home. You MAY lose your wife. YOU WILL HAVE A FELONY RECORD for the rest of your life. (Just try to get a decent job/bank loan with that)

As far as your latest response... you were "reeeeeally misunderstanding this." I didn't say anything about being sorry for the drunk driver. And yes, you would get what you deserved. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, but one thing that you didn't mention was having to carry the burden of the life/lives you'd taken. I do agree with YOUR WORDS... dumb... lucky... thankful.

The commercials are redundant. The same ones have been shown so much and for so long that look what you see in them... how they all have men behind the wheel/handlebars. They need to bring it from a different angle to really make a person think about the consequences of drinking and driving. Thats all I'm saying.

Don't get me started on commercials. The subliminal messages that commercials portray no question has an effect on younger kids because as we all know, for most of them these days their news is MTV. It always does seem like the white dudes portrayed in the commercials is always effeminate...unlike any I've ever known, I'll leave it at that, but there is a lot more you could say about that whole racquet. :crash:

Banned?
Women get pulled over because they suck at driving, men get pulled over because they are drunk.

I can live with that.

if i were to drink and drive i'd chase you down run you over, stop my car put it in reverse and then drive over you in reverse

Maybe women don't get charged and/or ticketed so much because they use their wiles to get out of it.

Or something.

I think Duke's got it right. You typically don't see women OR minorities depicted in any of these anti drunk driving commercials. It's the "PC police" and not the real police that are at work in these commercials!
