Animated gif playback problem

I have strange problem on my PC.

Many animated gifs just do not play, neither in browsers, nor with windows image and fax viewer. ACDSee also can't play them.

I've tried to open them in Opera 9.22, in Internet Explorer (with options->advanced->play animations switched ON) but with no result.

I also tried to save them to hard disk, and though size of the file is often large (about 1 mb or more, they are downloaded completely, I checked for it), image viewers only display static (first) frame.

this pisses me off. I know that there are a lot of issues with video files, different codecs, file types etc. And I know how to solve that problems by installing some codec packs and all that ****.

But I really have no idea, why simple GIF file can't be played without problems?! or are there also some different codecs and players for them? I've never heard about it!

Am I the only one who faces that trouble?
Any advice?
TIA!

I've only heard of this happening to Zone Alarm users. Do you use Zone Alarm? If so, uncheck the Animation box under Ad Blocking.

Thank you for the reply, Aces&Jacks!
Judging by the amout of answers, it seems that not so many people heard about this issue.

I do not have ZoneAlarm, I use Agnitum Outpost Firewall. After reading your post I tried to turn it off, but it did not help... Animated gifs are still static.
Really strange glitch.

Maybe something is wrong with my computer, but I just do not want to reinstall windows because of that specific problem... Hm... Will try to search deeper in google.

not Avast, but I have Nod32 antivirus (with regulary updated base) and strong firewall. Hardly some viruses can pass through that combination.

You would be surprised. Avast took care of some things Webroot missed.

I've had Avast for a long time and it has picked up anything my other programs have missed.
I've used Norton's, McAfee, and Webroot.
