I have a possible opportunity to go to Amsterdam this summer and I have heard so many wild things about it. Is it really as wide-open as they say? Any who have been there who could relate their impressions would be most appreciated. Any recommendations on specific places to go, see and do in the red light district, coffee houses, etc??

It depends on the intent of your visit...

Coffee house - BullDog Cafe. Touristy, but nice. I got high for the first of my only 5 times in life there and it was potent as hell. lol

Culture - Anne Frank's house, the Van Gogh museum, and so many other things...canal tours...

It's a wonderful city. Terri Summers should post here, since it's her hometown and Bobbi Eden as well (Dutch, been to Amsterdam many times)...they're our two Dutch star members... I'll give them a "holla" and see if they'll reply... :thumbsup:

I've been to amsterdam lots of times and i may be able to help.
As Gutte says the 'Bananabar' (Bananenbar) is a really wild place to go
there is a entrance fee which when i went was 50 guilders for all you can drink at the bar while strippers stand/sit/squat on the bar while you push vibrators up there pussies. There was a time limit of an hour when i went but other people i know who've been said there was no limit.
Basically anywhere in the red light area is brilliant, for americans this is a real eye opener. Prostitution is the name of the game and the choice is amazing over 20,000 whores in amsterdam ranging from the most beautiful women ive seen to the proper mingers, transsexuals, transvestites, old ,black, asian you name it! All in front of a full length glass door.
If you choose to sample the delights the prices are very negoyiable DONT PAY THE FIRST/SECOND PRICE (normally half of what they start at) at night the tariffs double so get in early.
There are live sex shows all over at very cheap rates.
I suggest you start at a pub called the jolly sailor or old sailor (something like that, ask anyone and you will be told where it is) this pub is in the heart of the red light district.
The party atmosphere is fantastic and if you only half good looking you will probably get laid.
If your hungry and pissed up a local delicacy is called 'shwarma' (excuse spelling) its like a plate of mince with spices and sauces ... i cant wait to go back and get some.
The cannabis out there is second to none and its the smoothest smoke i've ever had , you can buy any quantity or ready rolled if you so desire, i recommend the sensemelia or if you prefer resin the morrocan is delightful, skunk and super skunk is too powerful there. Prices are great but dont buy in the centre of town get it from the suburbs in the morning from a local cafe (they all do it) you get more out of town.
Hope this is of help certainly brought back the memories, when i was there last, 3 in the morning me and a mate had just finid=shed spit roasting some old hag for 25 guilders each and were walking home with my shirt and trousers on backwards.

In all honesty Amsterdam is over-rated. If you get one of the window girls it's all so mechanical and she wont even take her top off unless you pay her, and then there are the horror stories of the guys who visited post op transexuals and didn't realise until later that she had an adams apple.

Also I believe the Dutch Governement have just passed a law that prevents foreigners from buying marijuana in coffee shops.

So if you want overpriced sex, herbal tea and a pair of clogs for your girlfriend by all means visit Amsterdam :1orglaugh

You're wrong on that. The speed limit in Amsterdam is 50 km/h just like in any other dutch city. In the center of the city (the touristic area) you probably won't even make the 50 km/h because you have to stop for pedestrians who ignore the traffic lights every few seconds.

Last time i went was 2001 or 2002 and it was fantastic i can also recommend (if you get the chance) Hamburg, well most of europe is worth a look especially the ex eastern block countries there capitals are awesome eg prague

My friend just got back from Amsterdam last week and he got high without any problems. I know I heard the government there was trying to ban foreigners from buying weed and restricting it to Dutch citizens only but apparently that's not the case.
