Am I the only one who thinks MMA is bullshit?

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Bullshit! I see your in Chicago, well so am I. Come down to my gym if you want for some sparring and see if you can land one decent punch on one of our fighters.

Sure thing. When I get there, should I ask for "meathead" or "tough guy?" :dunno: Come on guy, we aren't in high school anymore.

Since you obviously misread what I said before, I'll say it in another way...

I respect MMA fighters for the amount of training and hard work that they do. I never said that I didn't. They are good at what they do and they should be proud that they accomplished their goal to become a good MMA fighter. I actually watch some fights from time to time because they're somewhat entertaining.

The thing is...being a MMA fighter doesn't make you invincible to people who aren't MMA fighters. One good punch/kick is all it takes...no matter who you are or who you're fighting.

indeed. and this is what we call "a puncher's chance." its a coin flip. sometimes a hit will stun you, knock you the fuck out, or do nothing. its the green 00 in roulette.

im gonna stay away from this one, im already fuming

That's just the nature of combat. It's been that way for thousands of years. The better fighter will always have a better chance of winning, but even the best are no more than that one tiny mistake or freak coincidental occurrence from loosing. It can only take a fraction of a second. The more people fight the greater the chance they will have that one tiny mistake will be what undoes them, and it's very hard not to make one eventually, even for the best. Some fights between competent people are in fact pretty much fought to the first mistake. That's why it's very hard for anybody to ever go undefeated. Despite the arrogance some of them might exhibit most of the smart ones know that they are by no means invincible because doing so leads to mistakes. All that doesn't mean a much better fighter won't win the vast majority of the time against a weaker opponent however.

Part of the reason there is so much grappling or going to the ground is that it helps control the situation and limits things that are hard to predict. Even people with the fastest reflexes have a hard time avoiding all the blows when they don't know when it's coming or where it's coming form. They don't have the advantage of knowing what their opponent knows and vice versa. Directly manipulating somebody else's body in a grapple or someway else helps tremendously in taking out unpredictability. A lot of the things you had to worry about, like a kick to the face you might not be able to avoid are taken out of the equation. Of course there is a whole new set of concerns, but it's usually easier to see them coming.

They do not even punch properly in this sport, its basically just to guys rolling about on the floor, bring back bare knuckle boxing now thats brutal and something i would pay to watch, two guys in a ring beating each other for sixty rounds, BRING ON THE PAIN

I didn't misread a thing you said, I'm glad you respect the fighters and the sport but you said any joe blow off the street could land a good punch and win which is not to possible. With some training yes but not straight off the street. As far as me being a "meathead" or "tough guy" you couldn't be more wrong. I do not lift weights nor belive in it and I don't think I've ever come off as a tough guy to one single person who has ever met me. Me giving you an invite for some training to get some more knowledge on how difficult of a sport this is, is not me tring to challenge you to a fight like a high school kid. Its just getting a bit annoying when I hear people talk about how anyone can step into the ring and have a chance.

I bet Mike Tyson was thinking this same thing before he stepped into the ring in Tokyo against Buster Street Bum Douglass....

ChefChi is correct...a single, lucky punch can end any fight. Nobody actually wants to see that, btw. Paying customers want to see an evenly matched event with the best fighter, on that night, taking it.

I, myself, am not a fan of mat wrestling, grappling etc. It's simply too boring for an average joe to watch.

I don't consider any form of fighting an "art form." Martial Arts are artistic when it's someone performing a string of moves in the middle of the ring without an opponent. That way you can see the moves that make up "The Crane Style" etc...

I have no idea why people use "art" and "sweet science" to describe Boxing. I can see strategy in Boxing, but I don't see Art or Science.

well to be honest, Buster totally outboxed Tyson that fight. Tyson kept getting peppered until the final knockout blows.

Boxing is absolutely atrocious at the moment, so I throw my hat in with MMA. I find is very entertaining, even on the mat. Boxing doesnt help it with Jim Lampley (long time boxing play-by-play guy for HBO and others) guest hosting Rome is Burning and calling MMA out as a dirty sport where they bite and poke out eyes. Yes, Jim, because boxing is SO amazing for sure. I mean, Jim cant be at all worried about MMA taking over boxing now, can he?

on the argument:
there's no such thing as a lucky punch. if you want to hit somebody and do, where's the luck? it's what you set out to do.
