Alternatives to Windows Media Player & Movie Maker???

I use VLC for playback of movie clips as it plays most codecs, although it has some trouble with some types of WMV files.

For editiing I use Cyberlink Power Director and then Power Producer for burning the finished movie onto DVD. I used to use Dazzle software too, which was pretty good.

If you want a good selection of options though, check out www.filehippo.com
You can get all kinds of stuff on there to download and play with ;)

Another vote for VLC.One useful feature is image and sound enhancement.Another very good player is SMPlayer which also has image enhancement plus a pretty good zoom function. There are many other free players such as GOM and BSPlayer, all of which have advantages in different areas.
Even my humble default image viewer, Irfanview, can show most video clips.

VLC, Infranview and GOM. I probably use GOM the most. Infranview is a good picture viewer as well.

Irfanview is a superb piece of freeware, it's always the first thing I install on a new computer except for the antimalware stuff. It's been my default image viewer since way back in the 90s.I totally recommend it for this purpose.

I know this has probably been beaten to death, but if you wanted to use WMP, try downloading Cole2K codex package. That should take care of the vast majority of codex errors in WMP.

But if you're dumping WMP, which I can't blame you for, VLC is good as an all around player. Foobar2000 is a nice lean alternative player too, depending on what you're looking for.
