Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died near Moscow at the age of 89.

To me, he'll always be a Janus: An inspirational figure whose first-hand accounts taught us about the horrors of Stalinism. On the other hand a pious hermit, a Russian nationalist on the verge of anti-semitism and delusion.

Knew who he was and that he had been a political prisoner for a long time and all that.But didn't know much else.Sure didn't know he was still alive.
