Alabama sheriffs feed inmates on $1.75 a day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Back in the day of chain gangs, Alabama passed a law that gave sheriffs $1.75 a day to feed each prisoner in their jails, and the sheriffs got to pocket anything that was left over. More than 80 years later, most Alabama counties still operate under this system, with the same $1.75-a-day allowance, and some sheriffs are actually making money on top of their salaries.

I don't think that the sherries should get to keep the extra money, cuz that just seems a guarantee of corruption. Otherwise, it seems reasonable to be able to feed people on $1.75 per capita per day.

That's a backwards set-up they have down there. I heard that most of those prisons never really stopped using those chain gangs either.

I agree 100%. Giving the extra money to the sheriffs could encourage corruption. But the $1.75 I would think would be enough to feed the prisoners. After all, it's not a damn restaurant.

don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Why should the tax payers pay to feed these guys well? Fuck em, they broke the law so they get punished. If they're only fed with less than $1.75 a day so be it! Spread the word, less people would do shit to land in prison. The prison system in this country is a joke anyway!

Starve to death with $1.75 a day? Hell no. Some people in Africa(etc) live on less than that in a week and they don't all die.

Not saying let them starve to death, but no point in feeding them better than some Americans eat! Feed em bread and water, they'll live.

I think that prisoners should spend all their time either reading books or else excersizing outside. actually, I think they should be in schools. That will really make kids not want to grow up to be criminals. "oh no! don't make me go back to school!"

they should work on reforming people at the very least. I watched a show about american jails a month or so ago. Prison doesn't help at all. It makes people more violent. Take someone who has no violent tendancys, lock em up with hardcore criminals. Lifers for example, people with nothing to lose and when they get out they'll be 100 times more violent. They had to be when they were in prison just to survive.

Its a broken system and only getting worse.
