I was never crazy about Akira. I thought it was okay but it didn't wow me. When it comes to classic Anime I tend to like Ghost in the Shell (the movie) and Ninja Scroll. As for an Akira live action movie, I think it's a bad idea. I can already see being Americanized. If they leave exactly like the original then it might be okay but fat chance that's going to happen.

I never really liked Akira either. Compared to a lot of other anime out there it just never seemed as good.

I'm not trying to dis those who didn't like Akira, but I think that if you didn't like it,it's because you didn't understand it.I can kinda understand that except for the fact that it's the benchmark of all full length feature anime and the greatest anime of all time. I would say that as far as the actual animation goes,it is only surpassed by The Wings Of Honneamise and Ghost In The Shell but far more superior than both as a whole including the story.

The problem with trying to make a live action Akira is that there is absolutely no way that they can ever make it as good as the anime and that's because there was absolutely no way they could make the anime as good as the manga. It's kind of apparent that maybe none of you have read the manga of Akira. The whole set was released a few years back in six, thick graphic novels put out by Dark Horse Comics. If you are a fan of comics then you 100% without question have to go out and buy these books. It's not only the greatest comic book, but also the hands down best story I've ever read.Katsuhiro Otomo is god!

The graphic novels have so much more about the overall story that the anime couldn't tell all of it in a 2 hour movie, plus there was a lot of critical elements that were changed it the anime from the manga.Any way you look at it,it is perhaps the worst idea to come out of Hollywood.I really wish that they would come up with something halfway original instead of rehashing the same ideas or fucking up the old tv shows and movies that we loved growing up.

If they wanted to take an anime and make it into a movie that could have very good potential for success, they could start with Macross Plus.I would say Ghost In The Shell too,but they would have to change the story too much(matter of fact, that would be a good thing because Masamune Shiro's stories never make sense anyway).I could really see Jessica Biel in this role. :yesyes:

Oh,and one more thing...

LEO WILL NEVER,EVER BE KANEDA!!!:thefinger

:1orglaughI've come upon alot of anime fans over the years that don't really dig Akira. I'm not really sure of their reasons, that's all their opinion really. To me, Akira introduced me to the medium, although I never actually got into it as a genre. As a kid I watched "Battle of the Planets", "Voltron", "Astro Boy", those types of things which all had their basis in japanation (anime, manga). As for the remake, I can't honestly see this coming to pass. With all the rabid fans of Akira that there are (and there are many) remaking their favorite film is sacriliege. And without Otomo behind the project, you can just see the whole story being rewritten and the point lost. It's supposed to be in two parts, so a built in sequel is in the works. What will they do if the film bombs? Release the second one direct to video? The film will lose all of it's political back story in the remake, which gave the original it's sense of time and place, even if it did take place in the near future. Leo as Kaneda? Isn't he abit old to play a teenager? Kaneda was a teen, right? Definitely not Tetsuo, he's the "bad guy". I heard that his production company was behind the remake with Warner Bros footing the bill, so it may be trade rumours that he's in it. Who knows? Just some meadering thoughts about one of my favoite films:cool:

 I'll judge it when I see it. I like Akira alright but dammit, it's not a sacred movie worthy of 'untouchable, dont remix, dont change it' status.

I look forward to it. If it brings a million new fans into the anime genre.. then they'll see the original and notice what everyone else has since the ...

FRIGGIN EIGHTIES! GUA HA HEEE!

I don't think that's fair. I "get it" and moreover I understand why many think that it's the greatest. It by far surpased anything that came before it and it was what "turned on" americans to anime. But taken out of that context, it loses a bit of it's luster and I think that most anime fans of a decade (or two now) later see it as a starting point instead of an end. And that's kind of the way that I look at it too. the genre of manga especially and anime are so varied in theme that different people are going to like different things.

It's like trying to figure out which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars? OR perhaps more apropos, who is the hottest Porn Star? The Greatest Anything is entirely subjective.
