Airline told woman flush her hamster down the toilet

Before Belen Aldecosea flew home from from college to South Florida, she twice called Spirit Airlines to ensure she could bring along a special guest: Pebbles, her pet dwarf hamster. No problem, the airline told her.

But when Aldecosea arrived at the Baltimore airport, Spirit refused to allow the tiny animal on the flight.

With her only friends hours away at campus, Aldecosea was stuck. She says an airline representative suggested flushing Pebbles down an airport toilet, a step that Spirit denies. Panicked and needing to return home promptly to deal with a medical issue, Aldecosea unsuccessfully tried renting a car and agonized for hours before doing the unthinkable.

She flushed Pebbles.

That's fucked up to do. I could understand if the pet was a dog, cat or baby bear. But not a hamster. Especially if she called twice to confirm that it's allowed. There's another story about a woman who wasn't allowed to bring her emotion support peacock on a flight... well no shit :wtf:

But to flush a pet hamster down the toilet :(

I remember few other stories involving them. But this is the worst I've read concerning them. Hopefully the animal activists will make it harsh on them.

They will make it harsh on both the company and the student :
In a statement, PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch told Fox News: "One phone call could have saved this animal, or some kind person at the airport could have helped. Flushing a living being down the toilet is not only cruel but also illegal, and both the person who killed this animal and Spirit Airlines - if an employee did, in fact, advise the woman to drown the hamster - should be charged. This must have been a horrific, terrifying death."

Spirit Airlines spokesman Derek Dombrowski told Fox News that an employee misinformed Aldecosea that Pebbles was allowed on the flight but denied that an employee suggested she flush the rodent down the toilet.
"After researching this incident, we can say confidently that at no point did any of our agents suggest this guest (or any other for that matter) should flush or otherwise injure an animal. It is incredibly disheartening to hear this guest reportedly decided to end her own pet’s life," Dombrowski told Fox News.

The Miami Herald noted that the U.S. Transportation Safety Administration was fine with hamsters on the flight, but airlines are allowed to choose if they want the rodents on board.

1) The guy from PETA is right, a simple phone-call could have saved the animal but that employee did not take the time to do it...
2) The guy from PETA is wrong, the student shouldn't be charged for what she did : she was left with no choice, she did what she think would be the least painful options, she refused to let the rodent go free and die in the cold, she choosed to give the animal a clean quick death rather than a long painful death.
3) By claiming they are 100% sure no one told the girl to flush the animal down the toiulet, the company is trying to put the blame of the animal's death on that poor girl, this is sickening

Ok, so, she's in Baltimore, she needs to go back to South Florida quickly to deal with some medical issues, her friends are on campus hours away from the airport, she has no familly in the area, the company refuses to let her get in the plane with the aniaml and she can't rent a car because she's a minor.
What should she have done, what would have been the right thing to do ?

It's a HAMSTER. It's winter. She probably has a jacket or coat.

You don't flush your got damn pet down the fucking toilet.

So, the right thing to do would have been to violate what she was told by the company's employee ? I thought conservatives valued law and order...
