I was never a big fan of his type of entertainment, but he seemed like a nice guy.

An honest comment that I find curious. So, you don't like zany improvisational humor. OK. Do you like great comedic acting (Mrs. Doubtfire, Night at the Museum, Mork & Mindy)? Do you like great dramatic acting (Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, One-Hour Photo). I'd argue that Robin Williams was quite likely the most versatile entertainment talent that ever lived. I'd urge you to give him another look by viewing some of his films if you haven't already seen them. Take a look at the stand-up videos I posted. If you still can't appreciate his talent, well....I feel sorry for you, D-rock.

Some of the greatest comedians of our time are the most depressed people in the world.

It has to suck to be have to be "on" all the time...

He was a great one, gone too soon.

I've dealt with depression, it ain't fun.

Terrible news :crying:. I can't think of a single person that doesn't luv Robin Williams. This is just further proof that fame and money doesn't always bring you the inner peace and happiness everyone thinks it will. And anyone calling him a "coward" can fuck off, so many people fear death, it takes a lot of courage to actually take your own life. He struggled with depression and substance abuse for years. He had more money than most people will ever dream of having, and he had done more things than most people ever will. Maybe at age 63 he was tired of doctors, rehab, and fighting depression in general. It is possible he tried everything else he could and this was the last thing he could do to find the peace he was looking for. No one has a right to judge him or put him down for that.

I have to disagree. In no way am I saying money brings you happiness but he had enough to escape. Leaving behind a wife and children is completely selfish, regardless of your reasons. When you have a family (which I dont have kids nor am I married) you take on a responsibility thats greater than just you. You have people who will never be the same because of this and depend on you. It is not brave to take your own life. Coward is debatable, but I think selfish isnt. Yes he had problems, like I imagine most actors do. Theres a reason they can stand up in front of all those people and have the need to fill a void. But even with those problems he should have went to his wife at his weakest moment and not to suicide. I dont know the extent of his rehab and what he did and didnt do but your family is there for you and I do think had he went to his wife and said, I really am about to kill my self it could have been adverted. The part where the money comes in is the escape. Maybe he cant escape from his mind but he could have escaped from reality. Buy a yacht and sail the world living out a Peter Pan fantasy. I mean the movie Hook really does seem to define who he was. I mean he was obviously off from from the start, just look at Mork and Mindy. The other part that bothers me is where you said he has enough. He was 63! Youve made it this far, further than most with these kinds of problems and now its too much? Now that youre out of the lime light I guess? Usually its during the height of their career.

Anyway, everyone is entitled to their opinions and this is just mine. Also I never thought he was funny. And just like you dont want to hear the cowards way out comment, I hate when people back up his "comedy" with you have to be smart to get it. No you dont. You have to be about 5 years old to think that shit is funny. Weird voices and off the wall references dont make normal conversation funny. Again, just my opinion. When everyone else is saying what a tragedy and a loss for the world, I just feel bad for his family. They lost their husband/dad and for a very avoidable reason. Most people dont have the luxury of losing a loved one to suicide as bad as that sounds. Most times its out of their control be it, cancer, car accident, etc. I dont care how sick you are, he was well enough to carry on an interview, he was well enough to tell his wife Im seriously thinking about killing my self.

Another honest opinion and I can respect your feelings. However, unless or until you experience depression in some direct fashion, it may seem like it is some sort of "choice". I assure you it isn't...any more than cancer or a car accident. No one decides to be depressed. As one who has lost 2 close relatives to this mental illness, I reiterate, don't judge someone when you have no idea what they are experiencing.

Robin Williams has committed suicide.

The comedian killed himself in Tiburon, in Northern California.

According to the Marin County Sheriff's Office ... authorities found William's body inside his home. They say he was found unresponsive.

He was unconscious and not breathing and the coroner suspects suicide due to asphyxia.

Williams was last seen alive at his house at 10 PM Sunday night.

Williams went back to rehab last month to focus on his sobriety. We're told alcohol was an issue.

Williams struggled with cocaine and alcohol abuse in the early '80s but was sober for 20 years.

Williams was 63.

One thing you are overlooking about depression and suicide is most people with depression who consider/commit suicide believe they are doing their families a favor. That their family and friends will be better off with out them. Depression is a mental illness it affects your thoughts and reasoning, you truly cannot think straight, or logically. I know from personal experience, I believed I would be helping my family out by taking my own life. Thankfully it didn't work and I sought help.

Your right he was 63, which is an age where life starts to get a lot harder due to just growing old and illnesses. Combine that with all the other things he had been dealing with. Suicide is not selfish, asking someone to live inside their head everyday so you can see them occasionally is selfish. Also buying a yacht is ridiculous, you say that because you do not have the means to do so, if you did You Might see that material possessions may distract you temporarily but they do not change the thoughts and feelings going on in your head. Also Jagger69 already touched on the last point I was going to make perfectly.

To be honest some of his stuff was alright. It was just always overshadowed by the things I didn't find interest in. While he did have a broader range than a lot of people give him credit for his bread and butter and what he will be remembered for most was the zany stuff. I can only take that in limited doses and only the well thought out among even that, and even then I thought some did it better than he did, like Jim Carrey for example. Also Williams always seemed to ramble on about ten seconds too long when he went on one of his frequent fast paced comedic rambles. He would often carry on with them and turn something that was okay and funny into something you just wanted to get over so whatever plot was going on could get going.

With that said, ironically my favorite performance of his was the Genie in Aladdin where those traits were taken up to the extreme. Maybe it worked out there best because it was a cartoon and the nature of what he was playing.

A LOT of REALLY interesting thoughts from Stefan Molenyux about Robin, life, addiction, marriage and more.

You don't hear this kind of stuff too often!

I might not agree with his conlusion in this case, but it's still an interesting one.
