The IRA is armed though. As are the INLA, the UDA, the LVF, UVF, RHC... Libya smuggled arms in for the nationalists and apartheid South Africa armed the loyalists. Where did it lead? To a lot of dead civilians.

I'll be honest, I have no idea who the other organizations are, and what and who they fought for. Yes, I get it, a lot of innocent people died, but Ireland has been under British rule long enough, that things could have been done LONG ago. Hell, they probably could have gotten help from America what back in the 17/18oo's. The point is, the number of people that die by gun, that AREN'T criminals, is far to low, to justify taking our guns, and taking our guns isn't going to stop criminals from getting them. We have a history, and it involves winning our freedom, by the use of guns, and it's important to maintain that. It's part of the founding principles of this great nation.

This frame of thought works very well... in a tiny little vacuum-sealed box. It kind of ignores the fact that the vast majority of "illegal" firearms were once legal firearms. Vinnie the Nose and Fingers Fitzpatrick aren't off in a basement somewhere churning out brand name knock-off Barettas and SIGs. So stemming the flow of legal weapons (especially to the negligent or incompetent) should logically stem the flow of illegal weapons as well.
