2018 FIFA World Cup

With the World Cup starting in Russia on Thursday, I thought I would start this thread for anyone interested in discussing the tournament, games or making any predictions :)

I think France or Germany might win the tournament, possibly Brazil and Belgium could be a tough team to beat, if they can get their players to work well together.

I don't think England will win, as I know what always happens to them at tournaments :1orglaugh

It's tradition that the criminal organizations of the host country play a role in determining the winner. Question is: is it the Russian Mafia or the Government itself that will get first crack at the teams?

I've got my money on a France v Germany final. Germany to win it. England although a decent squad (only two fucking scousers in it) will bow out at the quarters to either Brazil or Germany.

Interesting to see how the Russian Ultras get on as well.

The opening ceremony was pretty damn good. Not bad Ruskies ;)

Portugal 3 - 3 Spain
A greatch match.
Portugal scored the first goal after less than 5 minutes (1-0), then Spain scored (1-1) but Portugal scored again right before half-time (2-1). There was only 30 mintes left in the game when Spain scored twice (2-3), taking the lead but thanks to an incredible free kick by Ronaldo, Portugal got a draw (3-3)

France need to play a lot better than they did today, they never deserved to win and got lucky.

I can't see Argentina winning the tournament, they rely too much on Messi and when it comes to big tournaments he never seems to perform for his country.

About France, I'd say to things : They perform better when facing an adversary who plays offensive. Also, thing wenter better when Fekir and Giroud entered the game. Deschamps fucked up by not putting theml on the team's starting roster.

Argentina relies on Messi like Portugal relies on Ronaldo. But Ronaldo over-performs with Portugaml while Messi under-performs with Argentina. But Argentina has other great players such as DiMaria, Higuain or Aguero while Portugal doesn't.

So Argentina won? Before I had to leave it was 1-1

Messi doesn't perform? He was player of the tournament last world cup and pushed Argentina to the final!

And another major upset :

Germany 0 - 1 Mexico

Switzerland 1 - 1 Brasil

Spain, Brasil, Argentina and Germany, neither of these teams won their first match. WTF ?!

Great performance from Mexico, they deserved their win for the way they attacked Germany, if they had just been better at choosing the right pass then they could have won by a bigger margin.

None of the big teams have impressed so far, let's see what England can do tomorrow :lurk:

Germany looked old af compared to the young and energetic Mexico. It seemed like every time El Tri went on the counterattack Germany was outnumbered 2-1 or 3-1. El Tri had an excellent gameplan. Most teams would've decided to just defend for 90 and try and hit Germany on the counterattack but Mexico said fuck that we're going to attack right from the get go and put the pressure on Germany. We didn't see the Germany that we're used to seeing. It was nothing but misguided crosses into the box. Very disappointing. Mexico now has a good shot of making it to the quarterfinals if they can stay atop of the group

I am watching pretty much all the matches. As you guys already stated, many teams surprise, both ways.

As a german, I was half sure that we could get a not necessary easy, but safe win against Mexico. Damn was I unhappy.

Single thing that I predicted after 60 minutes was: They are going to switch up into WM gear in five minutes, and they did. It was just too late, and half an hour of champion power was too little too late.

We will go through to the next stage, though. And probably meet Brasil there

I don't think we these teams who did not win their first match should worry too much : most of their players are playing in top erropean clubs, have played many matches, the coach probably planned some heavy physical training os theyr might be in top shape right now but they will progress as the competition goes. These teams are "programmed" to be at their best for the 1/4 finals
