"At least 20 people were killed in revenge attacks on Muslims in Nigeria yesterday as religious riots intensified a day after the country's leading Anglican archbishop warned Muslims that they did not have a "monopoly on violence".
The Christian retaliation came after a widely publicised statement by Archbishop Akinola, who heads the Christian Association of Nigeria, and warned that the Association might be unable to contain its "restive youths".
Christian mobs with machetes and guns roamed the streets of the mainly Christian city of Onitsha, in the south-east, in retaliation for Muslim violence in the north earlier this week which killed dozens of people, destroyed churches and left thousands homeless.
Troops were powerless to resist the mobs. Revenge attacks were also reported in another south-eastern city, Enugu, where the Red Cross said at least seven people were killed and 150 injured. At least 73 people have been killed in the past five days.
"May we at this stage remind our Muslim brothers that they do not have the monopoly on violence in this nation," Akinola had said."

On the rioting caused by continued Muslim attacks (on churchs, etc) there have been wildly varied reports on number or casualties...and as stated :
"Certainly some of the reporting may be inaccurate as Nigerian Archbishop Kaigama suggests. Moreover, Christianity Today’s Craig Keener stated that readers should be wary that “international media outlets have often depended largely on the Muslim-dominated Hausa media of northern Nigeria.” Craig Keener also cautioned about “one recent case, when according to some reports many Muslim young men were gunned down charging peace-keeping soldiers, their bodies were displayed to the media in the mosque as if ‘Christians’ had slaughtered them there.”

1. Violence and wars within religious sects is nothing new. Europe was plagued by it in a series of clashes between Catholics and Protestants that spanned across the entire continent. Some of these clashes can still be seen in modern day Ireland. So, there is no basis for attributing such violence specifically to Islam. The Muslims are simply not that special when it comes to this situation.

Nothing mixed up. There are a lot of atrocities committed every day in Iraq and Afgahnistan - always Arab on Arab, or mostly. How f-in low can you go to use children as shields.
As to religious violence, yes it has gone on for over a thousand years. I think of the Crusades but I always go back to the Seljuk Turks as the real provocateurs. There was Christian/Muslim harmony until the Seljuk Turks unleashed their barbarism in the region, and nothing has really changed since. The real peaceful religion is Christianity, despite its shortcomings (not that I'm preachine here, but it's worth noting).
