176 feared dead in Brazil plane crash

189 Killed in Brazilian Air Crash

The pilot of an airliner that burst into flames after trying to land on a short, rain-slicked runway apparently tried to take off again, barely clearing rush-hour traffic on a major highway. The death toll rose Wednesday to 189 and could climb higher.

It's horrible when anyone dies, but remember that air transportation is still far safer than driving a car. 1.2 MILLION people die from automobile accidents each year. That's over 3 THOUSAND people every day.

it says that the plane crashed into a gas station.. but I thought that brazil only used ethanol fuel?

Dont this sorta shit put ya off flying

Look. This is exactly my point. As I said in my post just two up from yours:

Before you even think about giving up flying, give up driving first.

Absolutely much safer than driving. From what I'm hearing this sounds like a poorly designed runway which was a big factor in the accident.

They said the runway had been closed for a while because of complaints it was too short in bad weather, but just reopened because they felt the complaints didn't warrant the loss of revenue. :dunno:

Yeah, I read this on AOL and every other sentence was like "short runway" this and that...they compared LaGuardia Airport in NYC and noted that LGA's runway is about 700 feet longer and still considered "short"...They also said that the runway had been recently paved and they had yet to "groove" it to help the planes stop...

I'm from Brazil and this runway for the planes have been fixed last month due to some problems and now this happened... the guys who fixed will have serious problems with it... lots of people are complaining them.

Another thing is that as the runway was wet and the airplane couldn't stop people that were at the airport shout it to turn the airplane, the best thing would have been turn to the right side where nothing was on it and the driver turned to the left where he crossed a crossway where he hits a taxi and then a station of TAM.. it is now over 190 dead.

The soccer players from Gremio were supposed to get this plane to fly from Porto Alegre to Sao Paulo where they have one match tomorrow and they cancelled this plane for another one... they were lucky!!

Brazil plane crash may haunt government

Brazil plane crash may haunt government
Brazil's deadliest jetliner crash was an accident foretold. For months, air safety concerns have been aired in congressional hearings, and pilots and traffic controllers have worried for years about the short, slippery runways at Brazil's busiest airport.

Landing on the 6,362-foot-long runway at Sao Paulo's Congonhas airport is so challenging that pilots liken it to an aircraft carrier — if they don't touch down precisely within the tarmac's first 1,000 feet, they're warned to pull up and circle around again. The ungrooved runway becomes even more treacherous in the rain when it turns into a slick landing surface.
