I love Mars Volta... But I don't understand why you are comparing them to Rage Against the Machine. They are completely different genres of music.

Earlier in the thread I said I thought Mars Volta was a better band than RATM. I said this because Slipnot mentioned them and said he knew nothing about them. So I suggested he listen to them. Slipnot then posted back saying he listened to them and thought they sucked. So I posted a reply in order to say why I like one band better than the other.

I kind of agree with you, but IMO, ZDLR does not have the angst or volatile delivery in this 1st track released from the new band, than that of his RATM vocals, and regarding his bandmate in 1 day as a lion I don't know how skilled he is, I wouldn't even know who to compare him against? brad wilk? so maybe your right!!

I love The Mars Volta, but they belong to a completely different genre. Given the choice between the two, I'd always go with RATM, for their passion, their ability to rock a crowd in the way TMV cannot, and the fact that their music is simply easier to listen to. You really have to be in the right mood for The Mars Volta because their stuff can be pretty damn strange.

I like what I've heard of One Day as a Lion, but I'm definitely missing Tom's guitar work. RATM were already pretty minimalist -- 4 musicians, with little or no other tracks. One Day as a Lion seem even more stripped down. Much more interesting to listen to than the deluge of crappy metal and hip hop acts out there who are just doing the same old thing over and over again, but not as good as RATM, or Audioslave at their best.

I agree with the analogy, totally different genre's of music to compare against eachother.. I love the sound of RATM, whether it being a simplistic metal riffs, pretty effective and entertaining as far as I am concerned which is fine with me, I like them the way they are..

BTW, 1 day as a lion sounds exactly like RATM. It's just de la Rocha rapping over basic rhythms mixed with unorthodox guitar techniques. Just like RATM.

I like RATM as much as the next guy. But they aren't as talented as Mars Volta. They aren't as good live either (I've seen both).

Agreed, thanx for a little support.. everybody has their right to their opinions but some of these statements and negative remarks are just assbackwards if you ask me.. Even if one does associate 1 day as a lion as sounding like RATM, which I can clearly hear the difference in the music, not a negative against ZDLR's new band, but ZDLR plays keyboards and does vocals, while jon theodore handles the drums, ALL OF RATM's music is guitar, bass, drums, and of course ZDLR vocals, no turntables, synthasizers, or keyboards..

Off the top of my head, I can recall Zack donating $80,000 to the campaign group attempting to secure the release of Mumia Abu Jamal. During the 90s any fan of the band will remember the numerous benefit gigs they did for groups like FZLN, in the cause of Tibetan freedom and so on. Heck, they've even contributed to benefit albums...

Even when RATM split up, Zack wasn't just whiling away his time getting high on all the money he made with RATM. He was busy working with South Central farmers, protesting against their eviction...

In difficult times comes the greatest art. We are living (in America, anyway) in the worst political/economic climate since WWI and the Great Depression. RATM and Zack's Point of View have NEVER been more relevant.

Sadly, the corporate/capitalist machine has simply rolled on and on since RATM disbanded. Obviously, everything's gotten WORSE since they disbanded--War/Haliburton/Big Oil/Abu Gharb etc...

Audioslave was a great band but they were not an activist band. Chris Cornell is a restauranteur and Parisian citizen now. He did not want to "take over for Zack." He wanted to put out good, listenable music that can stand the test of time. He accomplished that. Morello and the other guys wanted to get back to activist music. Cornell didn't want to follow them. Band over.

Mars Volta is a mess of a band. I've tried to listen to them several times. I'd call them experimental arthouse rock. Practically unlistenable and unmelodic...but, hey, Radiohead doesn't have melodic music either and I highly like them. Different strokes for different folks?

Onedayasalion seems to be nothing more than this decade's "Temple of the Dog"...good filler music as we await the return of "the real thing."
