Actually the 7.62x39mm is not much more powerful than a .223/5.56mm. Especially when they get out to longer distances, since the 7.62x39 loses velocity and altitude quickly due to the shape and aerodynamics of the bullet. The .223 carries it's energy further downrange. I believe it's somewhere...
