Religion manipulates spiritual text for its own ends because spiritual text/ideals are meant to be allegorical, not meant to be taken literally.
it's easier to manipulate to feed xenophobia and paranoia which are deeply ingrained in human beings through eons of evolution.
way back in human history/pre history, such feelings served a purpose, enforced the sense of tribal defense - to rally a clan to defend there hunting grounds, live stock or harvest.
It also probably helped enforced the instinct to not want to fuck animals.
but now its a useless emotional reaction towards anything different.
spiritual teachings could put those feelings into prospective to see the reason for them, or be used to intensify them to the point of blind ************.
but when the spiritual teachings conflict with paranoia, they need to be amended, then religion comes into the picture.
Even though religion is more of a cultural inhibitor, it does hold the road maps, and the teachers who have the knowledge in how to read them.
its sort of like learning science through a public high school teacher.
you know on the whole they are full of ****, you just have to figure out what parts of what they are telling you is crap.
It also just happens that if you are full of crap, you throw out the cream.
