Three Strikes Laws

In the late eighties and early nineties, three strikes laws became popular in the US. These laws, for those who don't know, convert your third misdemeanor into a felony, with all the penalties of a felony. I've recently posted my opinion on the subject in anther forum, but I'd like to ask what others opinions are on the subject?

I think 3 strikes is fine, gotta weed out the slow learners somehow. The stupidest thing about the criminal system is mandatory minimum sentencing, that needs to be changed.

If it's violent crimes, yeah...throw their ass in jail for life. You are a felon and you get caught with a ***, yeah, your ass is gone. Fine with me. Felons are the last people on the face of the earth that should have firearms. If it's not violent I think there should be a clause of some sort.

If you fit into the category of a "habitual offender", than you should be punished more severly than others. That's why I think that the Three Strikes law(s) should be enstated throughout the entire US.

Yes, there will be situations where something as small as shoplifting a pair of gas station sunglasses could land somebody in jail for an extended period of time, but I think that the overall "good" that comes out of it would outweigh any ***** "injustices".

The way I look at it is like this...

If there is a bully in your school who repeatedly beats up innocent students and the only punishment he ever receives is a day in detention, that bully will continue to beat up students, as he would not be afraid of the consequence. Now, if somebody kicks the **** out of that bully the next time he tries to beat somebody up, that bully will, more than likely, become reeeeeally hesitant the next time he even thinks about beating somebody up.

I believe that laying down harsh punishments for ***** crimes could work the same way and make people think twice about repeating their mistakes.

3 seems a bit much. 2 would be better. Get caught once, alright, mistake learned. Caught twice, hung in public.

Why three? In California one guy had a third strike for stealing a candy bar.
Which isn't as bad as ****** or **** and they still get off with a slap on the wrist.

The three strike law is flawed.

There should be one strike for ******, ****, and other serious crimes.

Those things are felonies on their own. 3 strikes is about turning multiple misdemeanors into a felony charge, unless I am mistaken.

I don't like the idea of the three strikes law. Going to prison for life, just for stealing a candy bar isn't right.

it isn't what you steal that is being considered. it is the fact that you are stealing. dont want to go to jail?? dont fuckin steal.

To be sent to prison over a candy bar isn't right. Especially when prisons are overcrowded and they let criminals out all the time they should have executed.

I don't see why the system just doesn't let judges and juries use commons sense to give a convicted criminal a punishment that's reasonable based on the circumstances. Isn't that supposed to be their jobs?

stop thinking about the candy bar. it is stealing. steal 3 times your out.
it is obvious that fines dont stop this person from stealing...so you have to start thinking harsher punishments.

It was a one time thing. I'm not sure what else he had done.

But, he didn't steal three candy bars.

Exactly. You're going to play with fire until you get burned.
