where is our tax dollars going?

I be driving in some bumpy roads rilled with tart-filled holes. its like nobody cares about ohio. Now I went to florida and they're streets are smooth and flawless. I know that its because of tourists but come on now just because ohio doesnt have that many tourists doesnt mean they dont have to fix the streets...

Not really. The main reason southern states don't have major pothole issues and the northern states do is due to winter, not tax revenue. As a good buddy of mine from Chicago says, "We have 2 seasons up here. Winter and road construction".

Population density helps too. Obviously for roads that are maintained by state and county funds, the more people per mile of road the more you have to spend on each mile of road.

roads are what you'd call a bad investment.

Well, actually: no wonder, really!
U people livin' in "God's own country" don't really pay taxes, now do U?!
Compare this: I pay 45% of my income in taxes - on top of that I have to pay for a pension and "property taxes" and... can't recall 'em all.
THEN: for a new car you pay 198% of the price in tax => the government collects => we get free hospitals and schools, and perhaps roads with no holes.
B-sides that we have what I really like about most countries in Europe: several parties to choose from instead of just 2 evils...

well they say that, but I often wonder what the actual per capita earning is after all expenses are paid. I think that it would make a big difference when you factor in cost of living and wage.

and as you say, you pay more, but you also get more back in services. I think that if you had to pay for all those things out of pocket than it would be roughly equal in spending. most likely it would cost even more.

I'm in Indiana and the roads are pure **** here. Winter fucks em up and where my tax money goes is beyond me :dunno:

They make no effort to fix the roads short of dumping some kind of gravel mixture in the hole and driving on to the next hole. Gravel...seriously? It pisses me off that I pay taxes to this fuck hole state and they don't bother to do **** about the fuckin roads. But holy fuck, I bet our governor is living in the lap of luxury!

Roads? Here (this is true) they spend £60 million a year in compensation for pothole damage and £33 million in repairing the potholes. The asylum is run by its inmates.

We might have some of the worst roads in the nation. Not only do the winters tear them up, but we have lenient laws that allow heavy trucks to go where they shouldn't and we never have any money in the budget to fix anything.

Most of the money is going into someone's pocket.

I saw construction "workers" and they were just standing around.

Other times I see the equipment just sitting there or something that needs fixed not even attended to.

They just don't care.

Also, if the money from the lottery is going to help schools, then why does almost every school want more money every time an election comes around?

Answer that one.

It's because they don't care and the money is not going where they say it is.

You know, I remember back when I lived in SoCali and the "Official" city website had an ongoing contest. They urged people to go out and take pictures. The contest was for:

"Pothole Of The Week"
and
"Worst Street Of The Month"

I always thought it was funny cause it was coming from the official city website.

Sounds comically delicious. Here they use asphalt. ZING!

But seriously, the US government (and much of the Western world) has gotten way too top heavy. Everybody has to get their piece and by the time the money filters down to where it was originally intended to go I'd be amazed if even half of it is left.
Beyond that, this was a very different country with a very different economy when road crews concreted massive highways all over the place. Now there are a lot more drains on budgets and while concrete roads do last a shitload longer than asphalt they are also a shitload more expensive to build. I don't like to be one of these doomsayers that are all over the board lately, but I wonder if the US can really afford to maintain it's infrastructure the way they originally thought it could.

We should get our taxes back and the whole thing... When they give you your income tax they dont even give you half of what you gave the government.
