R u kidding me? Americans punched out more than 110 billion text messages last year, double the number in the previous year and growing, as the shorthand communication becomes a popular alternative to cell phone calls.

The nation's 270 million cell phone subscribers each sent out an average of 407 text messages in 2008, according to government statistics released Tuesday by the Census Bureau. That's more than double the 188 messages sent by the average cell subscriber in 2007. The figures did not break down the texting by age, but the overall numbers understate the thousands of texts sent each month by many teens - balanced out by older folks who don't text as much.

Depends where I am. By myself, I will call people. But I hate taking/making calls when I'm with a group of people. I feel rude accepting a call when I am in the middle of a conversation with someone. (Although I don't mind if someone else does) Texting on the other hand is less interrupting and easier to tell someone simple information, (Where I am, If I'm on my way, etc) but if I need details, like directions or whatever, I'll call the person.

I can't wait to hear the anti texting comments. In fact, instead of typing them out, since you probably hate that, give me a call at home and you can tell me about how texting is an anti social form of communication. How it lacks intimacy and is for lazy 13 year olds who couldn't hold a conversation if their lives depended on it. MSG m3 4 mi # ;)

I text more, but I like to talk on the phone. Makes me feel important and allows me to sing to songs in my car without looking like a bitch.

I do own a cellphone, but I do not use it.

I hate cellphones. They're electronic leashes and if you have one, everyone feels the need to blow it up with random pointless text messages, and those damn chain things.. I thought something like that would stay on the internet, and plus, if I'm not home, I'm at work. so don't text me asking me what I'm doing because I wouldn't be able to answer you till i got home anyways. that's my two cents

i hate mine but its a necessary evil for work :(

themrose is spot on: electronic leashes.

with work i prefer texts, that way i dont get cornered into a conversation when i just need the bottom line of what they're trying to tell me cos i get lots of calls/texts from people throughout the work day. outside of work i dont like either one but i prefer talking cos outside of work its most likely a friend and since its outside of work i probably have time to have a conversation.

Depends... If need to have a conversation, then talk is best. But If it's just a question, or simply casual conversation, then texting is better.

For me it really depends on the situation .... whatever is the most efficient at the time I suppose.

Also, my mood will usually determine whether I'll call or text.
