Windows Vista help

Please spare any of Vista bashing, its an old factory machine and I dont have time or money to upgrade.

I have a old HP laptop from 2007 that has Vista preloaded on it. The performance was becoming an issue due to hard drive space and a virus so I decided to reformat back to factory condition. So I went through the system recovery steps and everything went fine. However, after Vista completed "booting for the first time" a window popped up asking me to register my HP machine. I bypassed this by closing it in task manager and the computer booted into the desktop.

The problem is, the desktop is in Windows XP mode. The windows and taskbar are all XP style. I'm wondering if this was caused from bypassing the registration?
