why do videos usually look better with Windows Media Player?

I have GOM, KMP, and Windows Media Player

Why is it that videos look less pixelated and less "bright" in Windows Media Player? Do I have to download some 3rd party plugins for GOM and KMP?

If the videos look better in WMP, then use WMP. Why do you want to upgrade other programs just to give you the same performance as something that you already have?

What's the logic in that? :dunno:

WMP doesn't support a lot of formats, and lacks a lot of features (like remembering where you were in a video upon closing it for instance). That's why I have SMPlayer on my computer.

I wouldn't know, I don't watch porn.

But he didn't say anything about file formats. He asked about improving video quality in other media players.

I close vids in WMP and they reopen where I stopped them.
VLC has the same quality as WMP, it's free, and plays many files automatically (unlike WMP,.iso files, for instance) and can be set up to play Bluray.

I like WMP for the quality of the video, and ease of use.
I play .VOB files mostly, basically DVDs. And mp3s, and 4s, and some movies I saved in .iso.
VLC and WMP look the same, quality wise, and can be used for most videos.
VLC is a project of a University in Denmark, I believe. Free online.

I believe the point of having the inferior quality video software is to be able to play more file formats, so using one that looks as good as WMP and plays more File Formats than WMP is the optimum result he's looking for. I guess...

That's why I use VLC...it does just that, and more.

I associate VLC with any file that doesn't work in WMP, so I can click on any .iso movie file and it's playing on the screen.

I echo everything said about VLC. I honestly can't remember the last time I watched any video file with anything else.

WMP is a relic to me, superceded by better, much like IE. A few months ago I had some difficulties with my browser so tried IE, which was akin to solving the difficulty of my shoes being too tight by trying to walk on my head.

You can expand the functionality of WMP with additional codecs. Ffdshow is an open source library that adds support for different codecs and container formats, that can be used by any DirectShow capable player, this includes WMP.

Gom Player used to have filtering options that you might want to check, though I haven't used it in years, so I don't know where to look anymore.

VLC is probably the easier route, it works for almost everything, though it used to have some issues with MKV chapters, and advanced subtitles. They have apparently improved that in recent years, and it is really only an issue if you watch a lot of fan subbed Japanese, and Korean programming. If that is the case your best bet is Media Player Classic with the CCCP codec pack.

VLC is good for everything, don't forget to download DFX which also adds a better sound
