Why are Indian women referred to as Desi and Aunties?

Please advise.

I'm guessing it's a sign of respect.

I've always addressed my older female relatives on my mom's (filipina) side as aunty or ate (ah-teh).

I do the same on my dad's side as well but the American equivalent.

Didn't know there was a cross culture aspect. So it is spelled "Aunty" Noted.

Notice they don't call them bitches or ho's in most other cultures.

Desi is just a reference to being of the "desi" countries. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan.

In literal terms, it basically means traditional or being pure. Or referring to your own countrymen.

Well, I guess you aren't just a pretty face around here after all.

Because words Indian and Paki are racially offensive... Desi is an acceptable way to refer to South East Asian People.

Why is "Indian" offensive? They are from India, they are Indian. I am from America, that makes me American.

The latest word is that Japs, Paki, Thai, is offensive. I am hearing that now Asian is offensive.

Meanwhile, the British don't seem to have a problem being referred to as Brits, or the Scottish as Scots
Which is just a slang shortening of the name just as Japs and Pakis is.

It seems that some people in some parts of the world have thicker skin than others.
Or is that offensive too?

I can't keep track anymore.

Oriental was once deemed offensive, but I'm not sure why or if it still has the same status. Call someone from Texas a Texan and you win bonus points, I guess, unless you're not a fan of the football team from Houston. I hated that they took the name Texans, they should have negotiated with Bud Adams to get the name Oilers back.

The Texans may have the coolest logo of any NFL team. Next to the Raiders.
I'm pretty sure that Houston has the hottest cheerleaders.

I'd have to study up on the cheerleader situation. As for the logo, I should like it for a lot of reasons, but I can't get over my initial repulsion of naming the team Texans followed by naming David Carr starting qb for years. Ack.

how do you get any more apropos than the Houston Oilers? Ok, maybe the Texans, but still.

^ he may has well have been Captain America to me and my household growing up.

Well Houston is known for the space program ( Johnson made sure it was in Texas) It is also known for mosquitoes, so the Houston Skeeter's would be cool, big ass bug logo on the helmet. At half time a mosquito sprayer truck could drive out onto the field and give everybody a buzz.

Being of Asian decent, I always cringe when I hear "oriental." Its not really offensive I suppose, but definitely not my cuppa.

any slang or nickname or shortening can be offensive to some- a simple request is appropriate to see if a change can be made by the offending party.

the b word is used in the freeones picture set comments all the time by commenters.

how hard is it to use the full word- its like a shortening of your last name
