Companies don't really have any option but to outsource if they want to stay in business. The public buys overwhelmingly on price and if your competitors are cutting their costs by outsourcing then either you will be priced out of the market or be forced to follow suit.
The UK hung on to manufacturing until it became a millstone to the economy, it was only when it entered the post industrial age that its prosperity really blossomed.Some of the prosperity was probably illusionary but underlined what the Victorians found out over a century ago-there's a lot less money in making things than in selling,shipping and insuring them.
