Same here, IME most guys text either just as much or more than most women to the point where they're almost constantly loooking down at their phones even during a conversation with someone else. So at least as far as I'm aware guys are just as bad as girls for almost permanently tapping away at the buttons on their mobiles*.

* except when driving. The majority of people I've met, and as far as I can see from my car into other people's cars, do not text while driving... unless their driving at about a mile and hour during a traffic jam and then that's only to let the people who need to know that theiy're in a traffic jam that they're in a traffic jam.

But, since we're blaming people for this I'm going to have to blame the former Labour Government and George Bush. It's a popular option but I believe it has some merit

Someone in a committed relationship who gets free texts but has to pay for calls maybe. Or perhaps someone with a large number of friends attempting to arrange a party or something since you can't really call multiple people to hold some kind of "conference call" on a mobile. Or perhaps you're just catching up with a group of friends but for the same reason as before end up texting them rather than phoning them. Texting is also generally quieter so it's less of a disturbance to the public, for instance on a bus, than having a full blown conversation that would require you to speak louder than normal to overcome the sound of the surrounding noise. On a similar note, texting allows for greater privacy than chatting on the phone and generally prevents strangers from overhearing anything you wouldn't normally want to hear.

So really the question is "exactly what is wrong with constantly texting given that if they weren't doing that they be constantly on the phone talking aloud?". IMO, texting is the lesser of two evils

they can't ever shut up. always talking on the cellphone or text messaging. the iphone is in their hands at all times. guys do it too but not nearly as much. whenever i'm driving behind somebody who is going slow or weaving, 9 times out of 10 their on the phone or texting. i bet 90% of those texts are really inane bullshit like "lkr? omg. lol". i can't believe it's not illegal to text while driving everywhere. yak yak yak
