What is the greatest sporting event/moment you've witnessed?

Generally since I'm from the same 'hood as "America's Coach," I would say the Miracle on ice. Certainly when Mark McGuire smacked 62 I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, but to be honest between his 2001 U.S. Open route and his 1997 Masters, I go with Tiger's 1997 Masters event, which really got me crazy into golf. I know I am leaving an event or two out, but that one really stuck with me to this day.

You?

My brother George was an All-Big 10 linebacker at Iowa during the 1985 season. This game was the best I ever saw first hand. My family was in the sixth row on the fifty yard line behind the Iowa bench.

I was at Camp Randall Stadium for this moment, too.

And then at the end of the 1985 season this happened:

Call me crazy, but this one moment sticks out in my mind as the absolute most enjoyable, exciting and entertaining thing I have ever seen in sports. It was during wild card weekend for the 2003-04 playoffs (which for my money were the best ever), and Matt Hasslebeck said going into overtime "we're going to score." On the very first play, he threw a pick that was run back for a touchdown.

I'll never forget being 12 years old watching that game.

This was my favorite though:

* The olympic hockey golds in 94 and 06, the world championships in 87, 91, 92, 98 and 06.
* The track and fields olympics in 04 and the european championships in 06.
* Every alpine race that Ingemar Stenmark took part in when the whole damn country closed down.
* In general, I liked the olympics in 80 and 84 a lot, two (or rather four) big reasons that I am a sports fan.

1989 Arsenal win the league at Anfield. Needing to win by 2 goals to secure the title above Liverpool on goals scored, Mickey Thomas scores the second goal in injury time.
2-0 to the Arsenal saw Liverpool and Arsenal on the same points with the same goal difference, Arsenal though, scored more during the season (73 against Liverpool's 65) to secure an historic title win.

I should say it would without question be the "Miracle on Ice" but I wasn't even born yet, so...

The Chicago White Sox winning the World Series in 05.One of the greatest post seasons runs in the history of baseball, and I never thought that I would ever see it.

Do you mean "witness" as in actually there; or watched on TV?

Fuck it; I'll answer both...

Watched on TV: Cal Ripken, Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive-games streak on September 6,1995

Actually there: Eddie Murray hit home run #500 as a Baltimore Oriole at Camden Yards. I was with my girlfriend - soon to be wife, then later ex-wife.Someone wanted to leave early to beat the traffic....we were out at the concessions buying a beer um, "discussing" (arguing) about whether or not to leave; then I heard the crack of the bat, and the crowd go fucking insane...

Guess who wanted to stay?

I was thinking more of maybe watched or experienced on TV. I don't have too many memories of being at events because our pro sports teams all pretty much suck cock, but probably the greatest moment was my freshman year when my hockey team made the state tourney and I was down a few rows up from the ice with all my classmates. You can't really know how big it is to make that state tourney (the biggest in the country) but we made it. We had a few players on that team that went Division I after the next year. They were the shit. Such a good team. I was also at the X when Gaborik had his 5 goal game. That was pretty badass too but nothing compares to your HS making a state tournament.

i beat this kid at foosball at the rec center once.

that was like a week ago.

NOBODY beats me at foosball... nobody.

id say i have 2. the comeback in the playoffs between the bills and oilers. the game before, the oilers beat the bills pretty bad, so the game didnt sell out, we had our backup in, and we had to listen to it on the radio.

also, marty tying the alltime shutout record at 103. i had seats right behind their bench, and it was glorious.
