What is THE BEST Antivirus program? Why?

What is THE BEST Antivirus program? Why?

My McAfee provided by AT&T (DSL internet browser) is ******* me off. It has stopped working. Every time I do a virus scan the computer shuts down half way through. And the built in spam and pop up blockers have always sucked! Besides, I am about to switch internet providers to Sprint. I already use them for wireless.

I had PC-Cillin before, it worked too good, blocked EVERYTHING. Couldn't look at a lot of websites, use paypal, use online bill pay, etc... so F that!
I tried the free AVG before, it is garbage. It let a lot of viruses through. My last computer was infected so bad using it, I decided to just get a new one.

So any recommendations? Heard any good reviews?

Avast! is good. It's also free.

Avast! gets my vote to. Not had any problems with it.

I believe in Avast as well...the only thing I have against it is it won't run in safe mode. To me that's critical to any AV program.

Right now Avira 10.0 and Malwarebytes are what I use primarily...I also use Stinger as well as Spybot S&D...all of which run in safe mode.

But you can use it before Windows starts up. It takes a long time though since it checks all. But I didn' know it would not run in safe mode. Could be a bummer.

Safe mode? Why would I be using my pc in a safe?

To fix bugs normal operations won't allow because of some processes can't be stopped during normal windows operation.

Plus any AV program you run will run more efficiently because fewer services and processes are started in safe mode.

To me, running your AV detecting in normal windows operation is almost a waste of time as there are too many ways viruses can evade detection using windows normal operations and hook back into your system through system restore, etc.

I use Avast! on my laptop, works great and seems to make my computer run
smoother and faster.Much better than Norton.I also use Malwarebytes.I recommend using Avast! I have the 1 year subscription which only costs $20.
Haven't had any troubles.

Another vote for Kaspersky.:2 cents:

Best virus protection is...

1) a hardware router to prevent direct access from the internet to your computer.
2) common sense. If you ******* for pirated software, use key-gens, or just act stupid on the net, no anti-virus program in the world can save you anyway.
3) regular off-site/off-computer backups.

Been doing that for all my computer-life... never lost anything to a virus yet. A hard-disk crash between backups saw me lose some pictures... but that's it.
