What is Nascar all about?

You are out of touch! That hasn't been true for over a decade. The real reason the old school (redneck) fans are so pissed off is because the are so few (<25%) of their "good old boys" left to root for. The dominating drivers of today are mostly from California and west & midwest states.
CAL: Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Robby Gordon, Boris Said, Scott Speed AJ Almendinger,
NV: Kurt & Kyle Busch
WA: Greg BIffle, Kasey Kahne
IND Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Jeff Gordon here too,
About the only top drivers from "the south" that are recent winners and may challenge for the Championship are Denny Hamlin VA, Jamie McMurray & Carl Edwards (although current in a slump) MO. Trust me none of them are Southern enough for the old fans.

Calm down, take a breath. I am a big fan of NASCAR and it was meant as a joke. In reality it is pretty much the truth that it is a motorized track meet. For the record you don't have to be from the south to be a redneck. I live in Michigan (not Detroit) and trust me there are rednecks everywhere.:wave2:
I would say more of them don't like it because half the places are cookie cutter tracks with overpriced tickets, the cars are virtually all the same and indistinguishable besides the decals, the car of tomorrow is a joke, restrictor plates are a joke, they are not only not remotely stock they aren't even ridiculously modified stock cars anymore and there is nothing in a NASCAR vehicle that is the same as in standard production car, NASCAR has gotten too corporate and sponsors mean more than the fans, the drivers are conditioned as if all their actions and words are rehearsed by marketing people, they make up the rules as they go along and don't really have a standardized rulebook, they screw with small teams and operations, they have unfair rules depending who you are and have a level of favoritism that would even make formula one people blush, they throw a caution every time a tiny piece of debris comes out, they feel they have to artificially generate excitement instead of letting the pure aspects of racing do it for itself, green flag pit shots don't exist anymore for all practical purposes, and they have the stupid chase format. There is even more stuff I could list. I would say all those things bother those people more than having drivers from certain places. I've never been a NASCAR fan and even I know about this. A real old fan of it could even tear into the NASCAR of today even more than I have.
Personally I never liked it just for the fact they hardly drive on road courses and unlike ever other major racing circuit in the world they’re afraid to drive in the rain.
Not sure what it is all about. Never really understood it. All I know is that it seems to be pretty ingrained in southern culture nowadays.
Nowadays? Like an above poster (knowone) said, not all of the drivers these days are from the south. In fact, most of them aren't.
Racing to me is just about the excitement, the atmosphere, how cool it looks and just being entertained. I've never been to a race, but I really want to go. It's also about those crappy rain delays like the one we had today.

Maybe I'm just a silly southern girl, but isn't Nascar about "stock" cars racing at high speeds, just a few inches from one another? Using physics, and drafting techniques to accelerate, pass, and maintain distance from another car that "hypothetically" runs the same speed as yours? Add, the wrecks, the occasional grudges, and alcohol fueled fans... and I think that sounds like a pretty good time.
On a side note, restrictor plates are the dumbest fucking thing on earth. All the so called "super-speedways" have been completely redesigned hence making them boring.

Yes, but Tony isn't a pole runner. He will fall back to around 5th in Texas and finish somewhere in top 10. He isn't hella strong in Texas anyways, that really is a Jimmie track. BUT Newman should be able to make a strong run as well, so depending on who's got the stronger car tomorrow, one should be prominent. Either way Stewart/Haas is the team this year, regardless of the Hendrick motor.

Hmm, sorry to hear that you (totally) missed yesterday's F1 race. :tongue: Other than The Bore in Bahrain, this season has been loaded with passing and some truly fantastic action. Yesterday's race from China was pretty amazing stuff. Easily one of the best races I've seen in a long time.
To the OP:
I don't watch it as much, but I like NASCAR Sprint Cup just fine too. I know more than a few people who work in NASCAR, and most of the shops are within an hour or two of my house. It's just that I fell in love with formula cars when I was very young and that's where my heart is. Both series use rubber tires and V8 engines. Apart from that, they don't share much in common: the rules, and application of those rules, are VERY different. NASCAR is more rough & tumble. That's how it is at local short tracks and that's what stock car fans expect to see, especially at places like Martinsville and Bristol.
I've read that NASCAR Sprint Cup has become the second most watched/popular sport in the U.S., behind the NFL. Worldwide, Formula One is the second most watched sport, behind soccer/futbol. But NASCAR isn't very popular in other parts of the world. And F1 isn't very popular in the U.S. Different strokes and all... :dunno:

I have just switched over to Sky Sports 2 and have a bunch of cars being driven very fast around an oval track. Sometimes the cars stop and a bunch of people change the tyres and put more fuel in. Apparently there is 334 laps of this, so it looks as if I won't need to take a that slee..
I get a chuckle every time I see one porn star's name show up at all Nascar races:
