I am an avid reader. I spent a lot of time in airports and on planes so my kindle gets a workout. I prefer fiction but I also enjoy political books and some biography's but not usually.
John Grisham I have read everything he's published and enjoy his story telling. He isn't too technical which I like. Here are some of the authors I have read and my opinions. If you have a suggestion I'd love to hear it. Calico Joe was a great short story about a baseball player, and didn't have a single thing to do with lawyers!
Michael Connelly - being set in my hometown of LA and a recurring main character Harry Bosch make these books great and a familiarity to the character is always a plus. Great story teller with some dark and interesting stories for sure.
Jefferey Deaver - Hit & miss with me. The Lincoln Rhyme character does nothing for me. The guy always gets wheeled in at the last second to solve the caper which to me is lame. It's too staged and I always feel like when I'm reading his books they are written to be made into movies. However, his book of short stories was awesome.
Lee ***** - One of my favorites. The Jack Reacher character is awesome. He's a guy you can picture and that helps a lot with a book. He's not the typical hero because he doesn't care about money or fame or getting credit. He's a bad ass who kicks ass and moves on. The movie that was made with Tom Cruise was a fucking joke. In the books Reacher is 6'4" 250 pounds solid muscle. Tom Cruise is 5'7" 160 pounds soaking wet. I was embarrassed when I saw that he was playing the part. He bought the movie rights so he could play the part knowing no one in their right mind would cast him.
John Sandford - Another favorite of mine. All his stories are set in Minneapolis which is a great city that I love. The recurring characters are great, my favorite being Lucas Davenport. I like the idea that the good guys are flawed. like in one book Davenport was snorting speed to stay awake to catch this sick serial killer. The bad guys are always awesome in his books too and very creative twisted sick fuckers. I'm not such a big fan of the Virgil Flowers or the Kidd books. They are ok, but not nearly as good as the Davenport series.
Brad Thor - Another great spy / seal / CIA writer with recurring character Scott Harvath. A ladies man who thrives on ******* terrorists who doesn't flinch if he needs to ******* to get info.
Vince Flynn - Mitch Rapp is a great character. CIA operative who fucks the hot girls and ***** the terrorists. what's not to love? The stories move fast and are really easy to read and hard to put down.
Stephen Hunter - Might be my very favorite. He has a few recurring characters, Bob lee Swagger who is a retired sniper who had like a million ***** in vietnam who works jobs for the FBI. Another great character who is flawed and human. He struggles with his ******** problem and has been shot and ****** so many people he can't ***** well. Then there are a few books with Earl Swagger who is Bob Lee's *** that are my favorite. The one set in Hot Springs AK was incredible. A ***** retired WWII vet who is a bad ass fighting organized crime trying to setup in Arkansas. But the favorite of them all is the book set in Cuba in the early 1960s with Castro on the rise trying to take power and he's paid to **** him. Great story telling. I read this in one sitting on a flight from NY to Paris and didn't get off the plane so I could read the final pages.
Jimmy Buffet - another great story teller. Salty Piece of land is one of my favorite books ever and I've read it more than twice. I read bits and pieces here n there. A Pirate Looks at 50 is another great read. he writes about flying his sea plane to Colombia to fly fish for Tarpon which he never ended up catching a single one. The story is great and he keeps you turning pages.
Bill O'Reilly - I have read a few of his books and find them interesting. The book on Lincoln was by far his best work in my opinion. Many facts I never knew, but I don't get into history that much.
Robert Crais - he can be boring and tacky and his stories can be lame, but he can also write some great stuff. His recurring characters Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are super -PI's who always triumph and kick ass doing it. I loved the book Suspect. It was incredible. Not typical Crais at all.
Elmore Leonard - I've read a few of his books, even one of his westerns which turns out was my favorite. Another great story teller and you really identify with his characters. The Moonshine war is my favorite for sure.
Brett Battles - Hated the book I bought of his "Just Another Job" it was so boring and cheesy. I made it half way through and couldnt read another page.
Leonard Lynch - I actually bought this guy's book on accident. I thought it was Elmore Leonard and just didn't pay attention. The books were AWESOME! He's an Irish writer so some of the words and things he said were tough to follow but 99% of it was just excellent. the 2 books of his I read are Stunt Fight and Kingpin
So if you have any suggestions based on what you see here that you think I would like please let me know. I am running out of stuff to read and writers only put out a novel every 18 months or so which makes it tough.
