Gonzo is made because it's cheap and anybody can produce it. You get what you pay for. While at first it probably seemed like a brilliant idea to the people in the industry and a lot of the fans it just ended up being a curse in disguise that has slowly dragged things down to the lowest common denominator. It might have taken the better part of a decade but the negative effects it brought about for the quick buck are now being felt in full.

There isn't more above average performers now. While porn of the past sure had some people that didn't look that good performing in it, and had it's share of drugged out people or naive young women that shouldn't have entered the industry, it had a lot of memorable beautiful people and most of the top people now couldn't hold a candle to those people 15 or 20 years ago, not to mention how they would fare against the best people back then. Most of the people in it at that time at least looked decent at least and a lot of them were incredibly hot. They also brought much more passion and eroticism to their performances. A good portion of them could also act, at least good enough to make the scene work and stimulate feeling in people. Pretty much everybody now acts like they don't give a damn, probably because they don't. Maybe part of the reason was back then at least in a little way some of the producers, directors, and performers saw it at least a little bit as a form or art, or for some other reason seemed to care more about their work even if they didn't. Maybe some people cared because they could actually get to a little level of stardom, which is almost impossible now. Now we get either one of two things in most productions. Either they just mail their performance in or they act so blatantly fake and contrived it's a turn off. There is very little now that even seems like a semi-realistic situation to stir ones fantasy. People that act the part of practical whores sitting on a couch somewhere isn't that great of a thing. It almost might just as well be a inanimate sex doll sitting there at that point.

As far as people like like Sasha Grey and Jenna Haze go unlike the stars in the past nobody but the most fanatical of porn fans are going to remember them 15 or even 10 years from now, and if they are what are considered the top stars it's just that much of an indication of how much the industry is in trouble.

Well the ability to create, distribute and obtain porn nowadays is obviously unprecedented. That has lead to the availability of more porn at all ends of the spectrum in volumes not seen before.

I don't know what your tastes or standards are..and maybe that's the problem here but there is just far more great porn being made today. The emergence of gonzo has come about not only because it's easier to make but there are more people interested in seeing just action without some story line ..in skin flick of all things. I think that has lead to porn's explosion in popularity and virtual mainstreaming. Before, the viewer had no such choice. There are the artistic types who like a goofy story line but in the age of fast-forward, chapter and scene selection..can you blame people who are only interested in action?

I suppose there are some who look for a story in porn as parody porn is pretty popular..but it's fair to say most who want stories from their movies don't look for it in porn.

Having said that, there are farrrr more actors and actresses now with great porn skills than in the past.

I personally think Nina Hartley was the greatest of all time...primarily because of the diversity, quality and longevity of her work.

Just as sheer volume combined with talent level, looks, etc. mean today's quality is at an all time high...it is true that sheer volume combined with the talentless and not so hot girls means the quality is also at an all time low. But the quality is certainly there.

For every vintage girl, there are maybe 10 that equals her in talent today. Even with some of the really popular girls of the past like Raquel Darrian..she was good looking but on a performance level...she'd get blown out of the water by average performers by todays standards IMO.

Very interesting perspective D. In regards to gonzo,and quite frankly in the industry in general,one of the main reasons that there isn't the big star anymore can be looked no further than the internet itself.Mix instant access to whoever you want to see,FOR FREE,plus the fact that there really seems to be an over-saturation of talent,and voila! an industry that's financially in the slide.

Jenna Jameson is really lucky that she came out when she did,because if she were to enter the scene now,she would be just another face.

Personally,as far as American girls go,I'm really partial to Jayden James,Tanya James and Lexi Belle.All three are drop dead gorgeous and they always put on a good show.You can also add Gianna Michaels to that list.

I used to love Teagan,and would've said that she would be the next big thing,but I don't know,she lost a lot of her appeal,at least for me.Never really thought as highly of Jenna Haze as a lot of other have and still do.While I do like her energy that she gives in her scenes,I just don't think she's in the same category,looks wise,as the other four girls that I mentioned.

Right now,there just seems to be so many girls that seem to be,or at least could be on the brink of superstardom,but as I said before,with complete over-saturation of talent,and ease of availability,I really don't see there being that one or two top girls in the industry,unless it is completely manufactured by some of the big name companies.
