Please elaborate in the comments, thanks! What I'm most interested in knowing is WHY people think it's an insult or a compliment.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE IT????

:hatsoff:

Its an insult. In any way.

Yes, some girls, especially pornstars like to be called Slut, but its because they like to get insulted. So its still an insult not a compliment. Even if theyre proud to be a "Slut".

I think the only exception is BlueBalls that dirty little whore! :D ;)

I'm voting 'It Depends'
Circumstance, tone of voice it could be seen differently, although generally 'you slut' would be deemed an insult. 'You dirty slut' could be seen as erotic!

I'm also going with "it depends."

In normal, everyday life I think it's pretty insulting. However, in the adult world and especially the fetish or D/s world (Dominance/submission) it can be a compliment or term to "humiliate" someone for pleasure.

this word sounds offensive,
though personally I think that gilrs who like to fuck a lot, and act in an explicit manner are good/cool ones.

In this meaning "bitch" is more positive word than "slut". Slut is someone more dumb/submissive to my mind, when "bitch" is independent, agressive with some hot temper.

Many girls like to call themselves bitches: "sexy" & "bitch" - this words are bound together, it is kinda delicious compliment.

I think it depends.

If you say it to someone who knows you respect him/her (and most often you have a close relationship with), it's a fun word. You just gotta keep it at a comfortable level. If the one you're talking to knows you're not doing it for insult or to degrade him/her it's just a dirty word.
It's a bit like racial slurs, except it's more sexual. I have plenty of friends from all around the world and we call each other racial slurs now and then for fun.

But you can't say stuff like that too often, gotta even it out with some nice and cuddly words too ;)

I'd never call someone I don't know a slut though. That's disrespectful and no better than calling someone a 'fag' or 'n****r' in a degrading purpose.

It depends--is she doing it to me or to someone else?

persona non grata
In swedish the word "slut" means "the end". I guess it can be a bit confusing when someone who doesn´t speak swedish watches a swedish movie and at the end it says "SLUT" in huge letters all over the screen.

In english i definitely see it as an insult.

I also think it depends on the context in which it's used. I'm sure its well used and relished among lovers of dirty talk.

When you're joking around then it's cool but to seriously call someone a slut is obviously not a complement unless they're into that sort of thing

Like every other word in the English language it depends on the context.

When the girl I'm dating tells me a story about some sexual escapade she had in college, I can respond with "You slut!" and she'll laugh and say "I was!"

But if you're pissed off and say "You fucking slut!!!" it's totally different.

Context is everything.

i definitely use it differently in different contexts. for example, when i'm with my friends and i say 'zack you slut' i mean it in a joking manner but when i say 'paris hilton is a slut' i mean it in a derisive manner. so i'm going with the context bad word vs universal bad word for slut.

Doesn't feed trolls and would appreciate it if you
...neither? Insofar as I define a "slut" as someone who has a lot of sex with a variety of people, I don't see it either a good or bad thing (as long as they're smart about it).

In my experience, when used as a derogatory term with the above in mind, it's because the insulter a) holds silly puritanical beliefs about sex or b) is jealous that the insulted is generally having more fun than they.

i think it is a double standard word too .

my buddy calls himself a sult and is proud of it he is a player a whore however you want to word it . it has become almost his nickname it makes him laugh and he is proud of it .

how ever if your ina fight with a girl ( my ex g/f and thank god she is an ex for a reason ) if you call them a slut it can bring tears to there eyes and being hurtful . so i voted depends its all on how you use the word sult

I think of it as a description.

When used to describe a pornstar it can often be a compliment to indicate her behavior is a real turn on.

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
Personally, I think it's an insult. But, at the same time, it's just a word. Well, a title perhaps. If a girl is a slut and she knows she is a slut, why would she get offended if somebody called her a slut? I mean, I'm fat, I know I'm fat, so I'm not going to take it as an insult of somebody calls me fat, you know? Why? Because we all know that I'm fat, so it's no secret. If somebody called me fat, they're just telling me something that we all already know.

Anyway, think about this too...

What if the girl LIKES being called a slut? What if it was a turn on for her? Would it still be considered an insult to that girl, even if she enjoyed the title? Food for thought.

Its an insult if its directed at a girl, and a compliment if its directed at a guy.

Oh how I love double standards.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
I think it depends, but even if it's used in a less then favorable way, it's not the worst. If I were going to get derogatory towards a woman, I think whore is worse, and obviously cunt, but whore can be fun to, like..."hows my naughty little whore like ???? whatever". If you say that to your girl WHILE FUCKING, and you don't say it with anger or malice, it's not mean or insulting. But you also have to take the girls point of view on it also.
