The most controversial movies ever

I'm not talking about movies that were banned in the past for being too gory (ie Cannibal Holocaust etc) or religiously insensitive at the time but would be accepted now, I mean movies where the subject matter is still controversial no matter what the time period is. Here are 5 I can think off:

Irreversible
Audience reaction to both the lengthy, violent sexual attack (especially female viewers) and disquietingly brutal murder has ranged from appreciation of its artistic merit to leaving the theater in disgust

The Passion Of The Christ
Accused of being nothing but a 'snuff movie' and strongly anti-Semitic

Natural Born Killers
Director Stone has continually maintained that the film is a satire on how serial killers are adored by the media for their horrific actions and that those who claim that the violence in the movie itself is a cause of societal violence miss the point of the movie

Crash
The film was extremely controversial, as was the book because of its vivid depictions of graphic sexual acts instigated by violence

Fahrenheit 9/11
British-American journalist and literary critic Christopher Hitchens contended that Fahrenheit 9/11 contains distortions and untruths (it was supposedly a Documentary)

Others I couln't fit in were:
The Last Temptation Of Christ - The film depicts Christ being tempted by imagining himself engaged in sexual activities, a notion that has caused outrage from some Christians
A Clockwork Orange - A shocking look at adolescent violence
The Exorcist - Writing in Rolling Stone, Jon Landau felt the film was, "Nothing more than a religious porn film''

Feel free to add more

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
American History X

One sick film, and de Sade's book (from which it is based) is probably the sickest book ever written.

I still haven't gotten around to reading the book (although I'm sure I will do one of these days). But I definitely agree with you about the movie, it's very intense and that's putting it lightly.

Wasnt this an article on msn homepage the other day?

That's where I get the idea but I had a good look at movies they didn't list as well before listing my top 5 (ie Irreversible)

I remember The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover which I found quite disturbing (watched when I was young) and there was the The Birth of a Nation (1915), apparently pro KKK and anti-Black, that sounds interesting to watch to see what people could get away with in those days.

maredsous

You avin' a laugh?
Battle Royale and El topo were controversial due to the content of the sories. then you have films like 9 songs, The Brown Bunny and Baise-moi that featured actual sex between the actors.

pornophile

Banned
was Fight Club controversial? I remember some people taking it way too seriously and starting their own real life fight clubs. Though I doubt they took it to the next level, Project Mayhem.

Reading Battle Royale now, Love the movie. Irreversible is the only other movie besides Jaws to still give me nightmares after I watch it even though I regard both movies with high praise.

Man Bites Dog is another contraversial film where the filmmakers slowly start to join in on their subject's killing.

In My Skin. A women becomes obsessed with a wound on her leg and enjoys inflicting pain on it.

I really like Irréversible, a very disturbing movie.
Bernie, one of my favourite French movies ever. A guy who was raised in an orphanage after having been found in a garbage can when he was a baby decides to live his own life and to find his parents = hilarious, but quite controversial (though not too much, but still :D)
