Helping those in need is one of the major themes of the Bible and of Jesus' ministry :
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
(1 Timothy 6:17-19)
If anyone has material possessions and sees his ******* in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
(1 John 3:17)
For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give -- large or small -- will be used to measure what is given back to you."

And the crowds asked [John the Baptist], "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." (Luke 3:10-11)
He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses.

Still, christians are standing for less taxes for the rich, less redistribution, less government assistance to those in need
They claim their Faith is guiding the political choices but truth is they are voting in favour of policies that are denying what the Christ was standing for.
What a bunch of hypocrites !
