sinc the 1850s to the 1970s. the Republicans had the support of Black Americans. since the 1970s. when Black Americans magically switched to the Democratic Party. the Republicans didn't have many supporters after this. so they decided to seek support from the puritanical christian right. the rapture ready crowd, the born again types, etc.
this thought recently come in head as to why the GOP started to have the Christian right support them.
