This weekend is the 50th anniversary of the Carry On films series....

The first film Carry On Sergeant was made for just 73 thousand pounds. But earned 500 thousand pounds at the box office, a then British record in 1958. There was actually 31 films in the series and not 30 as stated on Wikipedia. The last been Carry On Emmanuelle in 1978 till they tried to revive them in 1992 with Carry On Columbus. But it was a massive flop.
Every film upto Carry On At Your Convenience was a massive hit. But that one flopped as it offended real trade union members.
There was 10 Carry On films that was written but never made. A plan to make one called Carry On Dallas about oil tycoons had to be scraped. As the Dallas bosses of the TV show wanted 20 times the budget of the film as it's base.
In 1966 they decided to drop the Carry On bit from the title. So on the initial release of Don't Lose Your Head and Follow That Camel did not carry the Carry On title. But on re-release on video and DVD has done.
Carry On England had nearly a completely new cast to take the films on in the future. But it flopped and was pulled from cinemas in 3 days after it's release.
The series even made it to the stage with Carry On London. Which ran in London for 2 years between 1973 and 1975. Carry On Laughing and What A Carry On also was big hits. Carry On London has been planned to be made into a film starring Shane Richie and model Victoria Silvstedt has yet to be filmed after 4 years. It's supposed to be coming out later this year.
Most Brits of my age or older remember something of this series when growing up. Even now they are still played on UK TV on one channel or another. Most have one favourite or so from the series too. My own would most likely be Carry On Screaming and the way it spoofed horror films or more closely the Hammer House of Horror films.
