I think it's important enough to point out some nuances here especially since you always claim the media are misleading us. Yet this "fact" is a fine example of the media not doing their homework.
In a historical context refugees have always been more male than female due to the dangers of the trip. Not only do they have to escape a war zone and travel hundreds of miles without lodgings or protection - which is very hard for the older people - but many families do not have the money to finance a trip to a safe country including the high prices for smugglers for all ****** members. Smugglers who can't be trusted by the way and might sell young women and *****ren who travel alone as prostitutes or slaves. They might also be victim of assault or ****.
Arab countries like Syria also have a male dominated society; man are considered more important then women, usually have a better education etc, something that will benefit them once they reach Europe to get a job. But it also means that in this war with many fighting groups wanting them as soldiers, many young male refugees are trying to flee compulsory military service. They wouldn't be able to support or protect their families.
So it's no surprise families try to reach a refugee camp or border and send younger males on a dangerous trip to reach Europe. These younger males might be able to support their families financially with a job or in case they get asylum they can reunify their ******. It's their best chance.
That being said, it all comes down to the numbers. The
Asylum Statistics by Eurostat are numbers that pretty much always show up in an argument about why Syrian refugees seem to be young men. However, these statistics focusses on applications from citizens of non-member countries without differentiating the countries. These numbers also include economical refugees from all kind of countries. And therefore are misleading.
Statistics show the numbers are pretty even between men and women according to the
United Nations High Commission on Refugees. It's when you look at the numbers for refugees who travelled by sea throught the Mediterranean when you can spot the difference: 55% male, 18% female; 27% *****ren (
Refugees/Migrants Emergency Response - Mediterranean).
In other words, while the majority seeking asylum in Europe might be adult males (for reasons given earlier), the statistics from the UNHCR show that of the total refugees coming out of the Syrian conflict (this includes refugees in the camps), the split is pretty even. In fact it would be very weird and fucked up if women and *****ren were the majority trying the dangerous trip.
