Stronger Alcohol Content Beer Thread

I rarely if ever drink beer anymore (too many carbs) but when I did or do, I like Deschutes Obsidian Stout 6.4%

but the strongest I've had is from a local brewery called Elysian Dragonstooth Stout @ 7.5%

I don't drink. I used to but not anymore. However, any hard liquor is determined by the word proof. For example: 150 proof = 75% alcohol by volume.

Proof divided by two = alcohol content by volume.

Examples:

1. Bacardi 151 rum is 150 proof = 75% alcohol by volume
2. Yukon Jack whiskey is 100 proof (in US) or 50% alcohol by volume. (in Canada) it is 80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume.
3. Jack Daniels sour mash is 80 proof = 40% alcohol by volume.
4. Cuervo Gold tequila is 70 to 80 proof = 35% to 40% alcohol by volume.
5. Stolichnaya vodka is 80 proof = 40% alcohol by volume.

Unfortunately beer is not measured that way.

Developed a taste for Mac & Jacks African Amber but it's only a 5+%.
Damn fine brew though.
Living in the Portland area more often than not I just go with whatever the 'special' is there is just sooo many good choices these days.

Well....this may be true but it's pretty easy to figure out what the "proof" value of beer (or wine for that matter) is if you desire. It's simply the percentage of alcohol by volume x 2. Why this scale even exists is by me....why wouldn't the percentage be the barometer? :dunno:

By the way, if you a re a hard core malt beverage enthusiast who wants to maximize the alcohol content in each brew for whatever reason, ice-brewed beers or malt liquors are the obvious choices. Steel Reserve is about the most potent domestic brew at 8.1%.

Strongest I've had and also one of the best beers I've ever had is a Polish porter called Zywiec at 9.5%. One bottle was enough to give me a buzz....
2nd strongest I've had is a local brew called Coopers Extra Strong Vintage Ale at 7.5%. Which actually has a stronger taste of alcohol than the porter I thnk..

Hey Jagger, is that stuff any good? It always seemed like cheapo stuff best enjoyed drinking out of a paper bag under the freeway as you yell at cars driving by. A Hobo Chic alcoholic beverage.

I love that stuff. Give me a 40 of steel and I'm super happy. A very nostalgic beer. Tastes like shit, but its super fun.

Avoid the cans at all costs though!

The strongest beer I've had is Grolsch Kanon which has a 11,6% alc.
It's not something you would drink when it is hot outside, more like a fall/winter beer.
Might not even be sold in the US? :dunno:

It's great....if you live in a refrigerator box, and drink out of a paper bag.

I like most of the beers from Great Lakes Brewing. Mostly the Lagers and Ales....I do not enjoy IPA's. The exact numbers aren't available to me, but generally they run around 10%-13%.

in my opinion the more alcohol the better.
my fav is 4.5 to 6 %, in fact never had with more

You've go the scenario down pat, amigo. It's great if all you want is a cheap drunk (three 16 oz. cans or one 40 oz. bottle are usually enough for a really strong buzz). The brew itself is really malty and, predictably, has a heavy alcohol tint to the aftertaste. Sort of a white man's answer to Olde English only a bit more potent. Here are some good reviews on it:

You have a way of making the consumption of rot gut beer, out of 40 oz. bottles, still wrapped in the brown paper bag, to have a sort of, upper crust class about it.

My wife went to the Filipino market and brought home 2 6-packs of this beer called Red Horse. It's brewed by San Miguel and it's 8% alcohol. I drank one of the 6-packs and thought the taste was good especially considering the strength. I was feeling nice and relaxed too. I saw Red Horse also for sale at Ralph's and bought another 4 6-packs. At Ralph's if you buy 4 6-packs you get 30% off. Go out and get some Red Horse.
