Biggest tragedy is that the vast majority of these is happening because of the greed of one species.
Or ignorance.
Furthermore I would argue a great percentage of the destruction has been caused by damming and hydro-electric power in the 20th century. It's one of the most "green" power generation technologies and one of the worst for biological habitats.
The Chinese continue to not care on the matter, along with select, other nations. Otherwise you'd see the US building a crapload, instead of only relying on its legacy plants.
Ironically there are so many "green" ideas that are
so destructive to the environment. The massive increase in mercury deposits due to household use has been the result of mercury in trace amounts of the 21st century generation of extremely inexpensive compact florescent bulbs.
We never seem to stop being ignorant in one form or another. With every new technology that is allegedly "better," we're just changing where the harm is done.
As one scientist recently put it, fission power may not be the most ideal, but it has a small, easily contained by-product and no other, negative impact on the environment -- unlike everything else (including fabrication of solar panels for the equivalent power generation).
