I would blame its controversy on religion, mostly, and the...'sin-izing' of sex our culture has been doing for hundreds of years (due to, in my un-educated guess, religion).

...heh heh. Well, that's pushing it a little. Unfortunately, being the top of the chain as we are, we do have responsibility not to over-proliferate ourselves. That said...there's too many people uncomfortable with their own bodies, and far too many uncomfortable with the notion of sex.

over proliferate? there are over 6 billion humans on this rock floating in space, I think we've already done a good job at that. As for being uncomfortable about their bodies, that is thanks to the media. Women feeling they have to live up to the unrealistic standards of super models, and men feeling they are inadequitly equiped downstairs due to porn. Oops and anti-porn comment. But you get my point. People are always trying to compare themselves to other people and will always find something negative if they do this. Religion has everything to do with the last part about the notion of sex!
Having been a preacher at one time, I can tell you that the whole idea in regards to sex was to maintain monagomy, not to ban sex. People being what they are, the message was over simplified and in some cases just twisted to indicate what certain people wanted.
Religion will always atracked those who are on the edge of oblivion and those people will interpret the bible and the bylaws to suit themselves.

The first porn was not on film of any kind. The first porn items were ancient rock carving and drawings, in other words prehistory Art. Phallic symbols and fertilely rites were all the rage among the “cave men”. They worshiped the penis and the womb as the magically creators of life. Apparently porn was very popular with our ancient ancestors. It would be a better world today if the religions of today venerated cocks and cunts, but noooo, they are demonized instead.
From the ancient world thru the dark and middle ages sex needed to be controlled because of inheritance and lineage rights. You had to know if children were really your true biological heirs for a lot of wealth and prestige were at steak. For example, a Jew is only a Jew if the mother is Jewish. It’s pretty good proof when a baby is coming of a women who the mother is. The father, who knows Roman Catholic priest were forbidden to marry because the church got fed up with the wives of priest demanding church property. Sex was made evil and absentance a virtue to control this problem.
As the various religions were established, the existing social norms on sex were incorporated into the religionist theology. Secular concerns were given supernatural authority. Uncontrolled sex loss the secular concerns of inheritance and was forbidden by God Himself as Evil. Porn, being an arousal aide for sex, was condemned for social control with no less than God as the authority.
Porn was always popular but more so today because of the sexual and technological

I agree with this fully and believe that this also has to do with porn's popularity as there are so much different kinds of models. So we are not forced to see the same image and body type pushed on us. We can see what we want.
I believe the religious contraversy stems from the majority of the actors/actresses who work together are having sex out of wedlock.

Sorry for that ranting tangent. To answer the original question, porn is popular because it reflects a truth about ourselves: we enjoy sex. Sex is like eating: it is a necessity for survival. It just so happens that both activities can be done for fun and pleasure. And is it no coincidence that the church has tried to demonize both? Well, they haven't tried to demonize food to the same extent, but I'm sure you guys have heard of the Grahm cracker? Why was it made? It was a dull food to repress those primal urges and senses.

Porn is becoming more main stream in the States. If you haven't noticed already, more and more of the hottest chicks around these parts are becoming porn stars or nude models..it's great! It wasn't always that way. The internet has helped the cause, imo.
