Severe drought in Central Europe

Since already two months Central Europe and northern Italy are going through one of the worst drought in centuries!
We in Milan didn't receive almost any rain since march 18 apart a few thunderstorms. What is more incredible is that in the Po valley april and may are normally rainy so compared to the average this is exceptional. What is the opinion of meteorologist, it is greenhouse effect, El Niño or what?

yep, it's awful. v. worrying/ nice thread and green repped

You don't have it as bad as I do, 113 days without any precipitation whatsoever and no end in sight, not only that but we get winds almost everyday and I'm talking 40-45 mph average with gusts 65+, and I live in a desert environment so there's dust all over the place! Couple that with all the trees being dead because the last time we actually had precipitation was when it froze and we had -10 degree Fahrenheit weather, which NEVER happens here and it killed all the desert vegetation, it's terrible here right now, dead tree branches and dust flying EVERYWHERE :(

You are probably from southern Nevada or the like and you are not impressed by this data but for us... Last spring we have four day with rain from dawn till sunset, just in may!

We've got the same thing going on here in SE Texas. We haven't had any appreciable rain for almost 3 months and now the daily temperatures are soaring into the mid-90s. Everything is dry as a bone....my so-called "yard" is slowly turning into Arizona.

Maybe this haunting melody by Traffic will help us all out:

In the last few days some abundant rain has relieved the situation but we aren't completely out of the crisis!

It rained here a few days ago.

Raining right now, I didn't hear of any drought here in the UK

In the UK any problem but on the continent the situation is different, particularly in the Alps it was relatively dry, in the last 10 day it has almost reversed the situation

Sounds like someone performed the wrong rain dance, or the right rain dance, but to the wrong deity.

Periodic droughts/dry periods are natural and not proof of "Global Warming". For example, in Europe the summer of '76 was hot and dry.

If anything the jetstream gets pushed north by a dome of High pressure that is cut off so it just sits. No conspiracy, no man made global warming, just simple meteorology.

Actually they did suddenly start talking about drought here a couple of days ago, they had all these experts on the news saying how bad it was and farmers complaining their crops were dying
