Senator Shelby of AL

I find it quite interesting that this senator of the south is so opposed to any bailout of the Big 3 and has fought it tooth and nail!

Meanwhile this man takes and give the following:

Taxpayers for Common Sense, a government watchdog group, studied the bill’s more than 1,000 pages and reported that Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., is the ninth largest earmarker in the Senate.

According to the group, Shelby inserted 64 earmarks worth $114.5 million for Alabama projects. In all, though, Shelby’s name was attached to 125 earmarks totaling $219.4 million in spending for projects in Alabama
.

The largest earmark in the omnibus bill for Alabama is $30 million for the University of Alabama for a project described as “an interdisciplinary science and engineering teaching and research corridor,” according to a database by the taxpayers group. Another $25 million has been earmarked for the Tuscaloosa Federal Building. Shelby was the sole supporter of both.

He voted no for the bailout, but I am sure will gladly take the funds below. What is with this damn grandstanding while gulping government money by the gallon?

Money for Alabama in the House-****** stimulus package includes $798.7 million for Medicaid, $560 million for highways and bridges, $355 million for building renovations at public schools and colleges, $211 million for special education in public schools and $198 million to help low-income students at public schools, according to the information service.

Alabama's share also includes $960.8 million to help the state maintain programs and avoid layoffs, with $586.1 million reserved for public schools and colleges and $374.7 million for state agencies.
