First off,I'm pretty sure this is in the wrong section,but I'm looking for a quick payoff,and this board is so busy,this is the best place to be.If it's in the wrong place,my apologies-and yes I tried a search.


For reasons that are pure necessity,I recently got HughesNet,and I'm having an issue. The issue is this: It supposed to be at least as fast as DSL,but right now,it's slower than dial-up.

I have a feeling that it's got something to do with the fact that I'm using Linux, as opposed to Windows.I think that there's some type of setting that needs to be changed,or an add-on uh, added.

When the satellite equipment was initially installed,my computer wasn't even here,but everything checked out fine when the tech tested it. (He had a laptop).

Anyone have any ideas?

I realize that probably no one here has either Linux or HughesNet,but the truth of the matter is this one of the only sites I can access,so I figure I'll improve my odds by posting this exact post on all three boards that I can access.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,but I at least want to thank you for reading this.

Well I'm running Linux UBUNTU to be exact!
If I were you I'd ask on a linux forum such as

There are some good people there I'd bet they can set you right !

dude, I'm a computer tech. I don't think its so much Linux, but possibly the means you are connecting to the internet. Maybe the network or wireless card is not set at appropriate speed or is possibly failing. Is the computer you are using older or not?

Assuming you don't have excessive bit errors on your link you have to realize your upload/dload ratio/speed while asymmetrical like DSL it will not actually be consistent with DSL speeds for Hughsnet. Go to a site with one of the online speed meters and check your connection speed.

Hughsnet is only good in cases where you can't get any other service. I suspect you have the lowest tier service and it's simply not fast enough.
