Thirty-one years after Ronald Reagan was shot and nearly killed by a would-be assassin, an online auction house on the island of Guernsey (an autonomous British protectorate and controversial tax haven just off the northern coast of France) is making available to the highest bidder a glass vial it says once held the president’s blood.

Now fans can put in a bid for a 5-inch long, plasma-stained glass tube and an accompanying medical form listing Reagan’s patient identification number, age, sex, and the name of the hospital’s chief cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. None of the boxes on the form indicating which tests should be done are ticked off, but instructions are written onto the page requesting the sample’s “lead level” be examined.

The anonymous seller provided online auctioneers with a “letter of provenance,” claiming that his mother, then a technician at Bio Science Laboratories in nearby Columbia, Md., was given permission by a supervisor to take the vial home at the end of the week Reagan was shot. When his parents died, the seller writes, the vial was passed on to him.

The auction opened on Wednesday, May 9, with a bid of 1,500 British pounds sterling ($2,370.90). By late Monday, “Lot 160 – Ronald Reagan Blood Vial” had a new top offer of $9,910.36.

Reagan Foundation threatens legal action over blood vial sale

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation threatened legal action over the online sale of a vial purportedly containing dried blood from the former president following a 1981 assassination attempt.

"If indeed this story is true, it's a craven act and we will use every legal means to stop its sale or purchase," said a statement from John Heubusch, the foundation's executive director.

Auction of vial said to contain Reagan's blood canceled

A vial purportedly containing dried blood from former President Ronald Reagan after a 1981 assassination attempt will not be auctioned online, but donated to Reagan's presidential foundation, officials said Thursday.

The online sale by PFC Auctions, based on the island of Guernsey, a British dependency, drew national headlines -- and a threat of legal action from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. The foundation's executive director, John Heubusch, called it "a craven act."

"We are very pleased with this outcome and wish to thank the consignor and PFC auctions for their assistance in this matter," Heubusch said in a statement Thursday.

And the seller, who wishes to remain anonymous, said in a statement released by the auction house they "would personally be delighted to see this important artifact put on public display by the foundation."

Bidding for the vial had topped $30,000 as of Thursday, PFC Auctions said.
