Phil Davison lets his audience know exactly what he is thinking as he seeks their endorsement to become the Stark County treasurer in Ohio. The councillor's voice breaks as he shouts his message out.

In the dog-eat-dog world of politics, it's important to stand out from the crowd in the run-up elections.

If that was the thinking of Republican hopeful Phil Davison, he certainly achieved it in an explosive speech to party members in Minerva, Ohio, which has become a YouTube hit.

The councillor's six-minute oratory forms the basis of his application to become the party's Stark County treasurer candidate, a bid which sadly ended in failure.

In the astonishingly loud and animated speech, Davison introduces his credentials without a trace of irony by shouting about how he has 'a masters degree in communication.'

He then continues by saying: 'I will not apologise for my tone tonight. I have been a Republican in times good and I have been a Republican in times bad.'

Other features of the excruciating speech include him constantly walking away from the lectern but then immediately returning to read notes and emphasising the wrong words.

After one particularly-impassioned section, the locals politician can be heard panting for breath and his voice can at times be heard cracking with emotion.

It also includes the memorable line: 'Politics is not touch football, it's winner takes all.

'I'm coming, both barrels, guns loaded.'

More than 56,000 people had watched the video on YouTube in just 12 hours, where viewers left incredulous comments.

One, Drake Dunn, said: 'Poor guy is on the wrong career path. He would have a bright future in professional wrestling.'

Another, izzyannfox, refers to the politician's list of academic qualifications by saying: '4 degrees and not a single brain cell... I love America'.

Davison failed to convince the Stark County Republican Executive Committee to endorse him for county treasurer during the speech and said he was surprised by the attention.

He told Politico.com: 'It’s shocking. I don’t know what to say. I’m speechless. I was emotional last night. I’m truly passionate about what I believe in.'

Davison said he received little feedback from the 100-strong crowd and was not sure how it was received.

'It was strange,” he said. “Feedback would have been nice. I really don’t know how it was received.

'I guess I consider myself an old-school politician, and that’s all I’ve got at this point. I like what I do and I want to get involved.

'Last night I spoke my mind,' he added. 'If I had to give it again, I would give it again. I didn’t mean to offend anyone—that’s the last thing I wanted to do. I want to be inclusive.'
