President Obama - Profiles in Leadership

I disagree. Obama talked about reaching across the aisle but he did so in a heavy handed way, alienated the "loyal opposition" and the whole thing turned into a pissing contest. Bitch all you want about Clinton or Reagan or LBJ but those guys knew how to play politics in order to strike a deal. Obama never learned that skill and, although I agree with most of his agenda, he went about attaining it in the wrong fashion. Don't misunderstand me....the republicans have been extreme obstructionists and whiners who present no plausible alternative solution but politics is the art of compromise and as POTUS it is Obama's job to make that happen. He hasn't and that has been his ultimate failing.

I honestly believe in the time when he first took over as president he should have worked night and day to ram all the legislation he wanted one after another down the rights throat as he didn't need their support.
He tried far to hard to give them a voice in the administration when that really wasn't necessary at the time.

Hmmm. Initially I don't think so. My gut was that he meant what he said in earnest, but was a bit naïve about just how fiercely he'd be opposed. He had a reputation from his Harvard Law Review days of being a skilled mediator who was able to forge compromises:

Obama opted against taking sides in the ideological disputes that often divided the politically polarized Law Review staff, casting himself instead as a mediator and conciliator.
That approach earned the enduring respect of Law Review members, including those not necessarily inclined to agree with his political views today.
“He tended not to enter these debates and disputes but rather bring people together and forge compromises,” says Bradford Berenson ’91, who was among the relatively small number of conservatives on the Law Review staff.

Oh and here's a link to that info for those who actually believe that nobody from Harvard remembers him/he never attended Harvard/he was never president of the law review :foil: :1orglaugh

Looks like Mitch McConnell's gonna get a happy ending tonight.

The fact that he reached across in any way was a mistake.

Blame your own people for not voting blue this time around Mongo. After all, they were the ones that voted blue to get them in the last time out. Find a nice quiet place. Light an incense candle, get into the lotus position and chant, "Hope and change. Hope and change."

Disagree. GOP leaders from day one planned to stall the Economy and make Obama a one term President.

One outtake

Did not matter how much reaching Obama did, the arms of the GOP were at their sides.

Well, the bottom line was that he was unable to find a way to make it work. That's my point. Why were those other presidents able to do so and Obama hasn't? And please don't play the race card. Again....I am in no way defending the republicans. They totally suck. However, politically savvy presidents find a way to get their agenda accomplished and naive ones don't. In the end, Obama has been shown to be the latter.

Perhaps you are correct. Whatever the strategy, it was ineffective. Still is. He's a lame duck and the country is in limbo thanks to our incredibly inept and corrupt system. Sorry folks, I have seen way too much of this to be suckered in again by any political rhetoric. Nothing will change after tonight except the maybe some of the players. Our government will still be in gridlock. The veto pen is a powerful one.

Looks like Mitch McConnell's gonna get a happy ending tonight.

Whatever tonight's eventual results bring is in no way a ringing mandate for the conservative agenda. People are fed up with government PERIOD and this is just the typical fickle schoolgirl mentality of the American electorate exercising their frustration. The republicans have no solution....they just want the power.

And Mitch McConnell still need to go to Walmart and buy himself a chin.

Agreed that people are sick of government.

I always thought McConnell resembles and owl more than a turtle. I guess he doesn't trust our liberal California plastic surgeons to give him a chin transplant.

I watched McConnell's speech. He looked like he tried to curl his upper lip only he has no upper lip to curl. Saw him squint and really try to concentrate too.

Marijuana and minimum wage increases are winners tonight. Personhood loses on all ballot measures.

Socialism. Obama in the 08 election mention that in his platform for Health Care and that scares people.

Also the deficit is a problem, witch is true but Obama inherited W Bush's at 8 trillion and because of the weak economy with fiscal policy (Business Cycles) trying to keep the country a float is the reson it has bloomed to 18 trillion.

But I say this, since in my life I pay for everything in cash and rent my apartment, yes even my car, it's used and only cost me 4k saving up. If Tea Party supporters are so concern about the national debt then they should cut up their credit card, move out of their houses that the bank owes until payed off, take back their expensive cars on loan, etc. Debt is debt.

Mandate now will be to shrink the debt. And cutting like some here that say it is welfare and Obama Care. Also add education, transportation, infrastructure (many of our city water lines are going have to be replaced) farm bill, national parks, and other things will be sliced and diced.

And like X-Fire said the rich will get richer and down the road when everyone is making peanuts, it will be to late. Because corporations with inversons and investors with off shore tax shelters now have a ally in the Senate to keep their tax dollars out of the country. Bad enough Bill Clinton sold us out to China.

I refuse to believe someone who writes something so stupid with such terrible grammar ever attended college, let alone graduated.

I wonder if Obama is going to show some humility and acknowledge the thumpin' his party and his agenda (his words) received today.

Something tells me no.

Or maybe now that the roadblock that was Harry Reid has been sent packing Obama will pull a Bill Clinton and work with the opposition.

Something tells me no.

Look at that sea of red. We're still a center-right country.

And now Dear Leader will have to do his own dirty work now that Whorehouse Harry is out. I'd say it's better late than never, but his obstructionism has dearly fucked us up for years. His nullification of 387 House bills is infuriating. So long, cocksucker.

More Americans identify themselves as center or right than they do left.

Partly because, for many people, Left = Socialism/Communism, Soviet Union/China/Cuba, because to some Amereicans, "liberal" is an insult but nobody considers "Conservative" to be anything but a neutral adjective.
For decades (and still now) the Left has be demonised, so it's not surprising at all that so few americans agree to consider themselves leftists.

Soon to be former senator Mark Udall's "War on Women" mantra fell flat with the voters of Colorado. It was over for him when those on his own side began ridiculing him as "Mark Uterus" and the left-leaning Denver Post endorsed his opponent.

Please democrats, keep up with the identity politics. Colorado aside, we'll continue to fall for it. We promise.

As if McConnell won't do the same if needed to advance the conservative agenda? Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. He just serves a different master. I do agree that Harry Reid sucks however....unfortunately, so does McConnell.

It will be interesting to see what happens now that the republicans will actually have to start initiating solutions rather than just complaining. And the dems will, of course, now assume the role of obstructionists and whiners. The field has flipped is all....and it will give the American electorate 2 years to evaluate progress and judge the majority party accordingly in the 2016 presidential election.
