Polite Term for addressing an American with very dark skin?

Hii guys, I'm headed to America (united states) very soon, and was wondering what's a polite & appropriate way to refer to These black skinned Americans?
I know 'Black' is kinda racist over there, so I don't want to offend people.
Would the term, African American be appropriate? I've asked some of my friends online and they said most of them consider themselves NOT from Africa, so I don't know. . :dunno:

Or what about term, Negronoid which is the scientific way to refer to a black American

Any help would be much appreciated, ya big dick bastards

Don't go.

If you are worried about what to call people with a different colour skin to your own then you should probably stay at home.

"Black" is not racist.

And as Adam alluded to, exactly what kind of conversations do you plan on starting with people that you need to invoke their skin color to get started?

"Pardon me sir/ma'am/homey, I couldn't help but acsertain that you seem to be a Negro of particularly dark pigmentation. Might you possibly know of a proper chitlin' joint the wife and I can repair to?" *Incredulous silence followed by gunfire....

I'm just worried that if I get mugged and have to describe him to the authorities, I should be able to use an appropriate term. BTW welcome to the board Larss :)

I've heard that black American cop can not arrest a white man so they are unlikely to be too subtle issues related to races.

What. The. Fuck.

I've heard that any Finn who hasn't committed a felony by 21 must become a gay male escort so they are unlikely to be too subtle issues related to orientations.

OK, so where we're at is, you don't want to be perceived as racist, but you operate on the premise that if you get mugged, it's automatically going to be by a black man. And if so, you want to be sensitive to said muggers feelings by racially profiling him in a wholly appropriate way.

Good on ya mate!

I've often used the phrase "you people" and found the results to be positive. Try it.
