POLICE: ‘LET ******** HAVE *** LICENCES’

A POLICE chief stunned MPs investigating whether licensing laws need to be altered after the Cumbrian shootings by telling them ******** as young as 10 should be able to apply for firearms licences.

As it stands, ******** must be 14 to obtain a firearms licence but only need to be 10 to obtain a shotgun licence. But the Association of Chief Police Officers’ lead on firearms licensing, Assistant Chief Constable Adrian Whiting, suggested lowering the age for firearms to 10 in line with shotguns.

He was giving evidence before the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee into firearms control following the horrific events of June 2.

Mr Whiting said the ages were products of legislation dating back to the 1920s. When pushed by MPs on what single age limit there should be for ******** being allowed to have a licence under supervision he replied: “The minimum age should be 10 I would suggest.”

He told MPs just 26 10-year-olds currently had shotgun licences,
