Playboy and Penthouse in bidding war for... Playboy?

Founder Hugh Hefner proposed to take the company private Monday morning. Later in the day, the owner of Penthouse magazine said it will put up a bid for its longtime competitor.

Surprising turn of events. If Penthouse were to win, I think it might bring a new edge to Playboy which I hear has been losing quite a few subscribers.


Who do you think should own Playboy? If Penthouse were to own it, do you think they should change anything to it?

It wouldn't really be Penthouse getting it, it would be the guys who bought and ruined Penthouse.

For me, Penthouse has been far superior to Playboy for a number of years now. The problem with Playboy, for me, is that their style and approach has never really changed ever. They coasted along on their iconic name alone and never really pushed themselves to move with the times or innovate.

The majority of their websites are really quite disappointing considering the incredible resources they have at their disposal and of the labels they have bought up, they have done very little with any of them that I can see.

Personally, I would be VERY surprised if Penthouse had the money to buy out Playboy and I doubt very much that this would ever happen. But the idea of taking Playboy public is the type of move that the company needs to hopefully drag it into the 21st century, and hopefully it will attract forward-thinking investors.

Playboy does have an audience. If other people want a Penthouse edge to their reading, they can just buy Penthouse. If I were Penthouse and had the resources to buy Playboy, I would keep it the same and dominate both sectors of the market.

The problem is that even with a changing society and declining popularity Playboy still has a place in the adult world. It has brought in a lot of hot women that wouldn't have wanted to pose nude otherwise. If you changed Playboy it wouldn't be Playboy anymore it would be some mockery of it with the Playboy name slapped to the front. Playboy should remain how it is, but change the way it's delivered to make itself more relevant.

If Playboy got any more tame it would be FHM. With all the free porn (anyway you want it) why would anyone want to buy the magazine or subscribe to their website? Playboy is annoying with the way they make every woman look the same as the last one.
