I was reading a magazine today , from years ago & it asked a few football players from the time "Who would be in there own dream team?"

The rules were :

You cant just pick a full team like Celtic 67 , United 99

Any player you select has to be retired i.e not playing anymore

You have to have seen them play in a competitive game either live or live on on TV , so people who were born in the 70s cant say Pele

They have had to play at the top level in your lifetime

You are allowed 4 subs , but they have to be 1 GK , 1 Def , 1 Mid , 1 Stk

Formation has to be 4-4-2 or 4-3-3

State the country they played for or were born in

OK here is my team 4-4-2

GK Sergio Goycochea (Argentina)

DEFENCE

LB Paulo Maldini (Italy)
CB Franco Baresi (Italy)
CB Daniel Passarella (Argentina)
RB Josimar (Brazil)

MIDFIELD

LM Zico (Brazil)
CM Ruud Gullit (Netherlands)
RM Michel Platini (France)
AM Zinede Zidane (France)

FOWARDS

STK Diego Maradona (Argentina)
STK Marco Van Basten (Netherlands)

Subs

GK Harald Schumacher (Germany)
DEF Richard Gough (Scotland)
MID Lothar Matthaus (Germany)
FOW Gary Lineker (England)

Ive tried to keep it to people that has impressed me in big tournament or people that played at the top level for most of there playing careers

Have fun :wave2:

Maradona, at his best, was the best layer in history. But in fact, with all the trouble he had he wasn't at his best very often.
Pele was a bit lower but he was at his best nearly always.

My Team :

GK : Jose-Luis Chilavert (Paraguay)
LB : Gabriel Heinze (Italy)
CB : Laurent Blanc (France)
CB : Franco Baresi (Italy)
RB : Lilian Thuram (Brasil)

MF : Gennaro Gattuso (Italy)
MF : Steven Gerrard (England)
MF : Ronaldinho (Brasil)
MF : Lionel Messi (Argentina)

FW : Andriy Schevchenko (Ukrain)
FW : Georges Weah (Nigeria)

Substitutes
GK : Peter Schmeichel (Denmark)
DF : Gabriel Heinze (France)
MF : Raï (Brasil)
FW : Alan Shearer (England)

LM Zico (Brazil)
CM Ruud Gullit (Netherlands)
RM Michel Platini (France)
AM Zinede Zidane (France)

Errr.. none of them is a defensive midfielder.
Recently, Real Madrid had a team like that, with no real defensive midifield. even if they had Zidane, Figo, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Casilas, Ronaldo, Beckham and more, from the day they sold Makelele to Chelsea, theyu just sucked ! The year before they were great. 2 years after they bought M. Diarra and then won the Liga but al the time they didn't had a real good defensive midfield, they sucked.

You can have all the stars you want, if you don't have a real good player to run over the midfield to take back the ball from the opponment's feets, you'll never win...

This is why I took gattuso in my team. He may not be the most spectacular guy in the history of the sport, but but he's a real warrior on the pitch, he'll run everywhere all game long

Gullit played the DM role sometimes and was good in it thats why hes here , more later in his career , he is the best all round mid-fielder ever!!!

Cheers for taking the time to post , but its meant to be players that have retired , anyway my team would still beat yours easy !!!

Ok, I kow, having Zidane as a substitute is an heresy. But, i choose to puyt RaPï in my starting eleven because I like him much more than Zidane : During 7 years, Raï was the star, the leader and the captain of Paris SG, wich I've been am a fan
for like 20 years. on the pitch and outside, he was a real gentlelan.
This guy is my ultimate favorite player

In their prime:

Pele
Maradona
Beckham
Lalas
Harkes
Donovan
Ronaldo
that guy from Cameroon that one World Cup year
Chastain
Foudy
Hamm
Tony Meola in goal

My team might not win a lot of matches. but you know we're selling tickets like a G 'N R reunion concert.

Schmeichel

Bergomi W.Miller Maldini Brehme

Zidane Keane Gullit

R.Baggio Weah Maradona

Subs:
Higuita
Baresi

I debated about Schmeichel whether to put him in but he lost out, how can you not have Zidane in? He is one of the few players thats nearly up there with Pele & Maradona other than that nice selection

Good team mate!

Bergomi , Willie Miller , Brehme , Keane , Baggio & Rijkaard all were on my shortlist but they just missed out , Miller to Gough , Brehme for Josimar the only reason he got in was his performances at the 86 world cup , had to go for matthaus over Keane & Rijkaard and Baggio lost out to Zidane

Zidane's been red-carded 14 times.
Considering he was offensive midfield, that's a lot.

Zidane was very talented but he could loose his mind quite easily...

Flawed genius but arent they all

I don't think so.

Platini wasn't
Pele wasn't
Beckenbauer wasn't

Any player you select has to be retired i.e not playing anymore

The bit in bold is the best part of you thread
("And they gave us James McGrory and Paul McStay,
They gave us Johnstone, Tully, Murdoch, Auld and Hay,
And most of the football greats,
Have passed through Parkhead's gates,
All to play football the Glasgow Celtic way".)

I didn't want to just have retired players as the players we have now a days are all i can remember tbh
